(off topic) Oxymoron of the day

I was amused (and bemused) by a local TV weatherman who blithely predicted temperatures in the "low triple digits." (How's that again?)

Fortunately, high triple digits are a dry heat....

Bakersfield, California, I've heard that all my life. (I found out the truth of that when Papa Elf and I had to spend a summer in Ohio.) Give me dry heat any day!

And when I was a child, only the very wealthy had air conditioning. Stores didn't, schools didn't, churches didn't--just about nothing but some restaurants and nearly all movie theaters had AC. Just about every movie theater had matinees every day in summer. They were VERY popular! All schools ended the year in either the last week in May or the first week in June, and opened up the Tuesday after Labor Day.

That's uncomfortably hot even in °F and deadly in both °C and °K

We spent Christmas in Toronto one year, and I shall never forget hearing a ridiculously cheerful voice coming out of the radio saying "The temperature today on Queen Street West is –16 degrees, expected high today of –14 degrees." But as you imply, that's dry cold, which is quite tolerable, even to an Englishman — provided that there isn't a strong wind. Once it starts to blow, at those temperatures the best place is definitely indoors!

By the way, have you come across Montreal's "underground city"?

Underground city?

No, I've never heard of it. Please tell us more! (Inquiring minds want to know!*)

Yes, Winter in Montreal is pretty brutal

I'm not sure how it developed, but it's as though the subway stations under the city centre became linked with the basements of the shops and malls and so on. If you worked in the city centre and wanted to do so, you could vanish underground on a Monday, and live, eat, and work without ever going outside into the Winter weather until you needed to travel back to where you lived on a Friday night – or even on Saturday. There's a link below to a tourist map of the place.

I've only been to far western Canada (British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon) and the Maritime Provinces, nothing in between. But Moscow has a similar downtown underground mall. When we were there in 2001, we were amazed to find how many of the shops and restaurants were American.

In fact, I don't think I've ever been to any of the Iron Curtain countries. The closest I ever got was the fence that divided the two Germanies in Honecker's time

Our first visit to Montreal was in 1972, when there was only the veriest shadow of what exists now. The subway had only been in existance for about 5 years. We had quite a surprise when we visited again in 2011.
