'Way off topic, plus some venting on MMX

Has anyone here played Shadowrun/Dragonfall Director's Cut? It's on sale on Steam this weekend for $3 USD, so I'm thinking of getting it.

In a more on-topical note, I've about given up on MMX. It was fun up until the Tomb of 1000 Terrors, but now it's just not that much fun anymore. Constant battle against relentless foes, die, reboot, repeat until you don't die, then on to the next battle against relentless foes--lather, rinse, repeat. The worst IMHO is the hordes of monsters triggered by Bosses. In just about every RPG I've ever played, you expect to wade through the hordes first, regroup/heal/restore spells, etc., then tackle the Big Guy. But not MMX. Once you finally kill a Boss, dozens of semi-bosses come out of the woodwork, and you can neither save your game, go someplace to replenish supplies, nor heal/restore/etc. before facing them. I don't know how many times I've killed a Boss, only to die in the aftermath--and this is on easy level! The level system is also flawed, I think. In any other game I've played, playing at a more difficult level meant the risks were greater, but so were the rewards. In MMX the game even warns you that playing a tougher game means LESS gold and magic items. This is an incentive for anybody other than 15-year-olds taking time off from their pk hobby to brag about their death matches?? Life is too short for this. I got my money's worth from the early game, and don't feel compelled to force myself to finish just for the sake of finishing. What's the point?

I had similar problems with Crusaders of the Dark Savant

I finished the game proper, and then tried to tackle the bosses at the end. It seriously was not much fun. No matter how you played, your party ended up at least very badly crippled after each one. I got so fed up I abandoned it for a time.

However, when I restarted it, it was after I upgraded my computer. I reinstalled the game and restored my savegames, but as soon as I started the game, it crashed with a "Division by zero" error, so that was that. Pity.

CDS and the gorrors monsters

I played Crusuders a long time ago. Those optional critters at the end were very nasty, especially on hard mode (2 beasts of 1000 eyes...). Until I went downstairs to the area below. The monsters there gave lots of xp, I went up a few levels, came back to the tough monsters and criticalled on them almost immediately (instant kill). Getting to a higher level really boosts your crit chance...

Amen to that!

I played Dark Savant, too. It was tough at the end, but you could at least go rest/heal/restore after most battles. Not so with MMX. The 1000 Horrors dungeon is one way only. The door slams behind you and won't open until you slay all the beasties. Come to think of it, there are several more dungeons like that in the game. So you'd better make sure you have beaucoup potions before going into any dungeon, even if you have good healers. A lot of those beasts absorb mana.

Elf, that's interesting

Of the (many) criticisms I'm on record as having about this game, being too difficult is not one of them. I don't recall many semi-bosses-after-beating-boss scenarios - which areas are giving you difficulty?

Having said that, I've only ever played a max-game style which gives my party greatest chance of success (ability to GM useful magics & best weapons) - not one of those parties I like aesthetically but which will be an extra challenge.

I'd encourage you to continue - the newly added Act 5 is an interesting play, but there's still some "hack & slash with little refuel possibility" in your future after the ToaTT before you get there. If it helps, I pretty much settled into a pattern where the main job of my 2 spellcasters became to keep the buffs & protections up to date while my tanks (slowly) hacked away. Many of the buffs have durations measured in a few turns & by the time you've got the last one set, it's pretty much time to re-cast the first one. There is definitely a significant increase in difficulty if you try to fight "naked". It does mean that the spellcasters spend most of the battle keeping you alive rather than "attacking", but it works.

The crucial buffs are (from memory) Liquid Membrane, Celestial Armour, Stone Skin and the resistances (including Arcane Ward). You'll find that Celestial Armour gets chewed up almost with the next attack in the later game so you may find yourself casting every turn unless there's something else to cast. The stat buffs like Eagle Eye are less important after about mid-game. Liberal use of Sleep to keep the opponents at bay as well as Poison & Pain Reflection also help. And Burning Determination is something you have to always keep active if you're facing enemies with the paralyze/knock out ability.

And potions. LOTS of potions. This isn't like MM6-9 where you eventually get to a point where you virtually never need them - pretty much the only time my spellcasters weren't re-casting a buff when when they had to top up mana - which was every 5th or 6th turn. Ditto health - maybe every 10th turn for each character was a potion

Potions, anyone?

Of course in the later MM's you could make your own potions.

The Elder Scrolls series rarely required potions after mid-game. I got to where I wouldn't even bother picking them up after a battle: too much clutter.

I don't much bother with Eagle Eye. After gaining Spike, I found that you could fire him whenever you needed that extra slot (the first one filled by the Astronomer who gave you an experience boost with every kill,) and then you could always find him again back near his original cage, happy to re-join your merry band. (Whoo! Is that a Bulwar-Lytton sentence or not?!)
