Serial Killer!
10/09/2022, 16:36:30

    The Elf writes:

Just to let you all know that the Elves (Papa, Baby, and I) are fine. The notorious serial killer that a lot of you probably read or heard about is apparently alive and well and hanging about in this town we live in. He struck several times within two and three miles away from our house. I just heard on the news last night that our favorite Mexican restaurant is closing early nowadays to avoid people having to go outside in the dark. (The dirty rat likes to prey upon people in dark, poorly-lit areas.) Most of the victims have been homeless, but not all. Anyway, rest assured that Elf and family avoid going out after dark.

Yes, please stay safe, and keep your hand at the level of your eyes.

Uh Bones, I've never heard that before.

It was a line from The Phantom Of The Opera. A character is warning the male protagonist about having a noose thrown over his head from behind by the Phantom. I was hoping that you were a fan of the show and would get the reference.

Alas! The road version has never made it here, and Covid has quashed all travels to San Francisco, where it played for a good while. It's on my bucket list, but I see in today's paper that even the Broadway show is going dark soon. *Sigh*

Good heavens, Elf! We hadn't heard anything about this.

We rely on the TV and the internet for our news, and our regular sites are strongly biased towards where we live, which is in the UK. So news of a serial killer in the Stockton/Oakland area had completely passed us by. I'm delighted you're all safe – please make every effort to stay that way! And the very best of luck!

Actually, we Elves are bordering on paranoia, which as someone said, doesn't mean someone isn't out to "get" you. There's a streetlight about 5 meters from our front door, and we very seldom go out after dark in the spring and summer. (Our local mosquito abatement district reports that mosquitoes carrying west Nile virus have been found in our county.) It's still "summer" here, since our daytime temperatures are still around 90°F. (Come to lovely, sunny California--where summer lasts from May to November, real estate is about the most costly in the U. S., taxes are highest, homeless people can be found on most streets, and we're still paying around $6.40 a gallon for gas. We are also a "sanctuary" state, which has been misinterpreted to mean that illegal immigrants cannot be turned over to the Immigration Dept., even if caught in a violent crime. {Actual case.]) We also have wrought-iron bars over all the windows and doors, and security lights and cameras. Paranoia is alive and well, and living in California's Central Valley.

Sorry about the rant

Despite all its flaws, I love this state. I think I just had too much campaigning lately.
Forgot to mention another peril for us intrepid Valley people (not Valley Girl type Valley people, they're down around Los Angeles in its nearby San Fernando Valley.) The heat and aridity has furnished us with another thing: black widow spiders. They're not aggressive, unless provoked. Trouble is, putting your hand in a dark, warm place (inside electric meter boxes or cupboards in garages, for example,) is construed as provocation by the industrious widows. They very, very seldom fatal, unless you're very young or very old--yikes! But a widow bite is no fun at all. Papa Elf had one about 50 years ago. We all are VERY cautious. We've killed two this month. (I hate to kill spiders, since they eat so many harmful critters, but I draw the line at black widows.)

In fact I am nearly vegan but I think I would kill those if I saw them. Thankfully, we don't get them either in the UK where I come from or Sweden, where I live now. At least to the best of my knowledge.

I was waiting to pick somebody up at the station a couple of years ago, when I was approached by one of the chuggers who occasionally infest the place. He asked me "Do you like animals?" My sraightfaced reply was "It depends how they're cooked." The conversation didn't get anywhere after that.

Spiders

TTBOMK we don't have any poisonous spiders in the UK. The little ones I tend to leave alone, the big ones I usually pick up and either throw or take outside. The last but one that I threw out landed just in front of a robin, which promptly ate it.
