(Was going to wish you all bonjour, but after seeing the spam below, I decided not to.)

Anyway, Papa Elf and I have just returned from a week in Aquitaine, on a riverboat cruise through the Bordeaux wine country. Non mes amis, the French have not converted me from being a beer connoisseur to being an oenophile. (Look that up in your Funk and Wagnalls, as Rowan and Martin used to say.) So here's a keg of Elf Ale, made with some hops I picked up on the way to Charles deGaulle Airport this morning. As usual, if you would prefer the fruit of the vine instead of the malt of the grain, the magical brew will taste like that to you. I guarantee you you will feel good, but be able to pass any sobriety test, and never feel any ill effects the next morning. Salut! Prosit! L'Chaim! Cheers! Slainte! and good wishes to all.

A good idea.

I know that area slightly. I know the area east of there (the triangle whose approximate vertices are Pau, Perigeux, and Cahors) a lot better (or should that be a Lot better? ).

One of the holidays I still want to do is to drive down and see the cities of the Rhône — Arles, Nîmes, & Avignon and so on — down to the Camargue. And bring a trunk-full of liquor back with me, of course!

A lady I know just returned from the trip you describe.

At least more or less. It was also something of a wine tasting tour and was a riverboat trip. I know she was in Arles and Avignon but would have to look up the rest of her itinerary.

I've been to Germany and Italy, but just once, and never to France. It sounds like you guys are nearby? I really envy you if so.

As to ale-like beverages, an evening at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich will always be one of my enduring memories.

Munich? The Mother Church of brewing!

I'd love to spend a week in Munich, just tasting all the fantastic beers/ales there! (Mit pretzelen, bratwurst, weisswurst, und senf, of course.) I wouldn't want to go for Oktoberfest, though. From news photos I've seen, it's much too crowded, and way too many beginners who only want to get drunk, not to really TASTE the beer and savor it. (For those of you who may not know, beer is tasted exactly like fine wines. Pour, swirl slightly, enjoy the aroma, and sip a little, letting the beer slowly run over all parts of your tongue. Only then do you settle down and drink it.)
    Cheers!

I had a very very good friend (now, sadly, "gone over the mountains", as he put it) who lived in Würzburg. He was a historian, and I remember listening to him in fascination one evening as he laid out the chain of events that started in the late 10th century with Otto the Great's creation of the Prince-Bishops, and led through many windings to the fragmentation of Germany, its unification under Bismarck, and the rise of Hitler.

During that trip over there many years ago, we spent 5 days in Münich. The weather was glorious, and to be able to lunch at the Viktualienmarkt on some of the finest food in the world, and sip my way through some beers that showed up the English lagers for the poor brews that they were, was truly a treat for the Gods.

And if you go to Germany, there's something else you can try. The best-known German wines are from the Rhine and the Moselle, but go over to Franconia, and try some of the Franconian wines. Some of them are absolutely gorgeous — usually a little drier on average than the Moselles. I've tried to get them in England, but the ones I could get hold of didn't rank with the ones I brought back with me. I wish I could remember the names, but it was too long ago.

Though she's not from there originally. She's an American who moved there about 20 years after her husband passed away. She's also an oenophile and I know she often goes to wine tastings and has taken many trips to France.

I, on the other hand, am completely ignorant on the subject and have no taste (in the sense of discernment) to speak of. I drink a glass or two of wine every evening, but my selection could charitably be described as 'cheap white.'

Cheap wine

On one of the tours, a fellow we met on the trip asked if we'd bought any wine from the chateau we had just visited. I replied that we would have, but we couldn't find the Trader Joe's*. Several other voyagers confided later that they too preferred Trader Joe's offerings.

*Trader Joe's rather eclectic food store chain carries the world-famous "Two Buck Chuck" wine. It's real name is Charles Shaw, and for many years cost $1.98 U.S. Alas, they've now raised the price to $2.50. Despite the wino-in-the-gutter price, it's really quite drinkable.
