If M&M got a modern reboot

When MM6 came out, it was (at that time) a newly modernized rehash of an older series, with real-time gameplay and 3D graphics to freely move around in. The series not only survived this transition, it turned out to be awesome.

The point: What if some designers took another shot, and re-imagined the game again? No, not the bone Ubisoft threw to fans with their fully retro-style MMX. I mean, if someone actually cared about taking some risks, and reinvented M&M in a way that more-or-less follows the first person party-based idea, but innovatively re-structured to a point where even modern gamers would have a lot of fun. Have you ever wondered how such a game would play?

For one thing, I think individual spells (or small groups of related spells) would get buttons directly on the HUD. If anyone in the party could cast it, it would light up and I could just use it immediately---in a very Mass Effect 2 kind of way (never played 3, didn't like 1 or 2 enough to buy it). Thoughts?

There was a combination of reasons why I enjoyed the Might and Magic series so much.

    1. The gameplay is non-linear and there is a large random factor in treasure placements, which gives good "replayability". (This is where the "Eye of the Beholder games fell down.)

    2. There are keyboard commands which, when you learn them, are MUCH faster than the mouse

    3. The game can be played in both real-time and turn-based modes, real-time being ideal for a lot of the physical combat, and turn-based for spell-casting (you often need time to pick the spell to cast)

In 3 (above) I meant the later games, of course.

Spellcasting

Points 1&2 would still be there. You'd still have real-time and turn based modes as well, but putting spell buttons on the HUD would lessen the need to switch to TB (since taking character selection and the spell book out of the process would make picking spells a lot faster).

Hud/spells

I must admit I can never work out how WoW players use that hud and all those little icons. I'm not that fast with a mouse and the process of recognise that a square has lit up-move the mouse to that square-adjust the mouse pointer carefully so that it actually points to the square and not one of the ones next to it-click-repeat would happen slowly enough that the monsters would eat me alive. I'd also have to have a laser focus on that Hud to the point that I'd not really be aware of what was happening in the game world!. My age I guess. But TB is absolutely essential in a game I play.

I have exactly the same problem.

I had great fun with Minesweeper when I was younger, and I did once dip just under the 100 seconds mark for the expert level, which I considered a respectable time, if not a good one. Nowadays, I find I can still move the mouse fast enough, and accurately enough — but not both at the same time

re reboot

I would be happy with what you see in some games already. Heroes 3 got an HD, but changed nothing much else.

MM6.7.8 would need to also get a rework to use Win8 and 10 calls to let it run with no issues for the OS.

If they wanted to fix a few bugs, and incorporate some of Greyfaces work, that would be great.

Cost money, so not happening. It could be done cheap with the use of training new programmers and artist, but not likely to happen.

Afraid you misunderstood the topic

I was thinking about what a new M&M game would be like if it were designed to appeal to gamers in 2015, without being turned into an altogether different type of game.
