Starting MM6 again...
03/11/2015, 17:03:15

I am planning to start playing MM6 again after a long while. I've made preparations concerning character creation, but before I even install the game, I need to ask you a very important question. Thanks in advance for reading this.
I would really like to have no technical issues this time. The first time I played the game, it was 1.0 (i.e. no patches), and I was one of those unlucky guys to have their saved games deleted by a glitch with a memory crystal, if I recall. Now I've been looking up what patches are available for this bug (or any other major bugs) not to happen. I've concluded that there are two official ones, 1.0->1.1 and 1.1->1.2. I assumed that the official 1.2 patch would be the best choice, however, I found that it introduces some issues - some doors won't open.
I've also heard that there is an unofficial "GrayFace" patch. I'm somewhat distrustful of unofficial patches (except the TELP patch for MM9, but that's an official patch if you ask me ).
Does 1.2 fix something crucial that is unadressed with 1.1?
I would really appreciate your advice and suggestions.

I've heard that v1.0 can create corrupted save files. I believe I ...

saw the issue on occasion when transiting into another zone. Don't remember if Lloyd's Beacon caused similar issues. I recommend Mok's patch which cleaned up a few v1.2 issues. I've actually had games where certain areas are played using 1.1 to get around problems. If you have v1.0 you may be one of the few. v1.0 has problem that base skill level cannot be greater than 28 or 1.5 multiplying items will exceed 63 and revert to low resultant functional levels. I don't use my v1.0 version but it has the following "features":
    1) 16+ million experience bump possible (even as level 1)
    2) unlimited money
    3) total skills availability
    4) learning calc provided slightly more experience than intended
v1.1 removed these but added some other "features" that are also in v1.2 & Mok's. Recommend saving frequently. Once I have all 40 save slots filled I move them to storage folder(s) and start over. It is possible to create a save040.mm6 file, but it can be reloaded in game. Have to rename to between 000 & 039.
Grayface patch eliminates more known bugs and "features". Makes the game paly as designers most likely intended. Offers a lot of additional functionality including disc not required to play.
Use the find feature in this Tavern to find a lot more info. Use 3000 or even 30000 hours.

A rare problem with corrupted data during map transitions has been resolved.
It is no longer necessary to run the Cyrix helper programs (686_p.exe or cpuiden.exe)for Might and Magic VI to run on Cyrix systems.
A number of issues impacting the players ability to complete quests depending on how they progress through the game were resolved.
NPC functionality has been improved (the Seer will return the Ritual of the Void scroll, etc.)
Description text has been updated to clarify functionality of certain skills and spells.
Problems with certain spells, skills and items have been addressed.
Problems with skills boosted over 60 by items have been fixed, as well as a crash bug with characters with high stats.
Some CD-ROMs were not reading the Disk 2 (Play) CD. This has been fixed.

***Please Note: For a more complete list of changes, please check the readme.txt file. This readme file will be located in your Might and Magic VI folder once you have updated to version 1.2.

Also, note that there is a patch directly from 1.0 to 1.2. All are available from our File Library. (Links inside)

Thank you ragwort for all useful suggestions and Bones for providing me with the link. I managed to successfully patch to 1.2.
To sum up, it would be best to patch to 1.2. and then apply Grayface's patch?

I play the v1.0 game as standard

I keep a back-up savegame file every 10 levels or so, and that has been adequate. It doesn't corrupt often. I've played the game literally dozens of times, and I reckon I've had less than 5 corruption events.

As long as I make sure to set a Lloyd's Beacon beyond the door in Gharik's Lab that you open with the key, I have never had any gameplay issues apart from:-
    (1) if I play on a fast modern computer, I do not always get a name and profession when I hover the cursor over an NPC, and
    (2) again, if I play on a fast modern computer, some of the Easter Eggs don't appear, notably the ones hidden in the pews of the Silver Helms' chapels.

Thanks Chandor and Peter2

    Chandor, I applaud your effort!
Peter2, thanks, that is interesting. Actually, the corruption I had (actually deleting all of my saved games files) happened in relation to some memory crystal (can't seem to recall which). However, this was due to a specific error in the game, it was not random - I found many people experienced that when I searched the web at that point in time.
