Is there a tavern/guide for M&M X Legacy?

I'm stumped as to how even to play the dang thing. Hmm. Guess maybe I should try one of their forums (fori?) I never took Latin.

*grin* Fora, if you want to be pedantic. But for the hoi polloi like me, forums will do fine.

There's a story about an ultra-pedantic physics teacher who asked a group of seniors "Have you finished the experiments with the pendula?" and received the reply "Yes sir, and we are now sitting on our ba doing our sa!"

But I don't know of any on-line guide for MMX. There's a friend of mine who's playing it; if you have any specific problems, I can pass the questions on to him.

Eh, tried to play it - it just doesn't compare to the greats.

Yeah, MMX isn't the greatest, but at least they had the grace to retain the facial expressions, and named a character Lord Canegham. There're also a Crag Hack and a Sir Christian included.

Eh, there is that. And please, call me Pig. It's simpler and closer to what I imagine myself.

-- The story is hilarious. And sure, fora, not fori.

Writing everything with Latin-like endings doesn't seem to be pedantic, but rather archaic.

But I must admit I write and say pendula, ballistae, formulae, viri (not viruses). Maybe because I've been studying Latin for few years now ...

You know, your English is extremely good.

I know more than a few Englishmen who would be mystified by that story!

In speech, I always use formulae as the plural of formula, mainly because it's occasionally useful to be able to distinguish easily between formulas and formulas', but for the others I use the plurals of the general forms ——ums and ——uses rather than ——a and ——i.

English is a great language to communicate in because there are so few conjugations and declensions, and the word gender is not a problem because just about everything not specifically related to males and females can be treated as neuter. But the finer details are a b*****, and deducing how to pronounce words from how they are spelled is a nightmare. For example, the combination of letters "ough" can be pronounced eight different ways, depending on what the rest of the letters in the word are. There's no way to work it out – you just have to learn the words and their pronunciation.

And "ghoti" should be pronounced as "fish"...

That caused me some confusion when . . .

. . . I first came across the "Inspector Ghote" novels written by H R F Keating. I wasn't sure how to pronounce it.

Another funny tale: Note – In some contexts, the word "pronounced" means "judged to be".

In 1931, Noel Coward put on a play called "Cavalcade". There was a certain amount of controversy about this play, and some critics thought it would be a flop. Apparently, there was a lot of discussion about it in the newspapers, discussing the various different opinions, and some of the discussion got quite heated. When the play proved to be a hit at the box-office, it was considered newsworthy, and there was a story about a Frenchman who crossed the Channel to England, and saw a headline in a newspaper that read "Cavalcade Pronounced Success". So he turned around and sailed back to France . . .

I agree completely with the last paragraph -- in English, it's very easy to tell others what do you mean so they can understand. And it's very hard to do it right.
