MMX Legacy - great game but way too many bugs
01/31/2014, 18:28:45

    Ossie writes:

I'd love to recommend that all MM fans rush out to buy this & ensure it is well supported & we continue to get more of these games that we love. Sadly, I have to warn people to stay away for now. I encountered a game-killing mainline quest bug which effectively means that the hours & hours of play that I have already put into the game have been wasted unless it gets fixed. But that's ok, because pretty much right thereafter I too fell victim to the "save games seem to have disappeared" bug so even if it does eventually get fixed, it appears the entire history of my play is irrevocably gone anyway.

That's without counting the glitches trying to get a single-player game with zero online content to run through the compulsory Uplay client that Ubisoft insists on forcing upon people. And even if you get that to work, the first thing you are forced to sit through every time you load or quit the game is Uplay helpfully "synching your save games with the cloud" - which of course also fails but still makes you sit through three or four minutes of trying anyway. But again that's OK, because there's no point preserving my lost/corrupted save games anyway.

Oh yeah - not to mention all the spamming & phishing I have received since giving my (junk, for this very reason) email address to Ubisoft to register for Uplay. Any contention by Ubisoft that they even try to protect your data is not to be believed.

I expect that Uplay is Ubisoft's policy, but seems lose/lose: they spend money publishing a game whose fan base largely wants to just play single-player offline & is (justifably) reluctant to get sucked into their data pool, so nobody buys it & the game is a financial failure, so the fanbase gets no more games. Just mind-boggling.

I was having all sorts of problems untill I switched to Windows 8.1 and upgraded my RAM to 8GB. From that point on it worked like dream. No crashes and smooth play. There has been a lot of critisism of the game on the official forum which i think is a little unfair. it's not the best in the series but in my view it's a lot better than MM9. Also IMHO it does have a might and magic feel about it.

Spent an absolute fortune on mana potions though and i certainly needed the healer NPC.

Are you getting the same sort of problems that Ossie did?

I didn't exerience the game killing mainline questbug.

I did experience the save game seems to have disappeared bug but after installing the game on Windows 8.1, I copied my save games over and they were fine. Had no problems with save games since.

I was having problems with Uplay glitches and synching my save games failed every time. This all went away with Windows 8.1.

I didn't have any issues with spamming and phishing.

I was using XP. The demo worked fine in XP and I didn't bother checking the minimum requirements for the game until I started having issues. Must make a mental note not to be so stupid in future.

As an aside I took delivery of the boxed version today and I do like the cloth map.

Cloth map in the box game is pretty cool!

In all fairness, the look & feel are quite good & when (if) the current issues are fixed, I'd have no problems recommending it.

However at the moment I'd still be staying away. The current mainline quest bug can be avoided if you know about it (too late for me), but it kind of takes the mystery away when you know what's coming & have to play in a linear fashion to avoid it. Plus who knows what other ones are still out there that have yet to be encountered. And there still seem to be many other minor quest bugs which are hitting people randomly so you certainly can't enjoy the full game as intended right now.

The savegame issues also seem to be linked to the horrible Uplay client forced on people, but nobody seems to know for sure so no guarantee you won't lose dozens of hours of gameplay at some point for a reason nobody can explain.

Unfortunately as with MM9, the game is an unfinished beta, although in this case it seems that the testing was inadequate, rather than knowing it was unfinished as with MM9. This also seems to be common with Ubisoft titles. I'd still be waiting until at least the first patch to see how much they actually fix, & keeping an eye on the forums to see what's still an issue.

Unfortunately, and incredibly, I have encountered *another* game-killing mainline quest bug. This one is the well known "option to fly to the elemental forge is greyed out" which normally hits people who had the pre-release with only the first act.

First time through, I didn't encounter this particular game-killer - I eventually encountered another one.

This time, despite not having played on pre-release at all, it hit me. So it appears to be completely random.

So that's two games I've started, neither have been able to be completed.

Guys, sorry to say but steer clear. Incredibly bugged piece of sh!t. I won't be playing any more, will be hoping to get a refund & won't be touching anything that Ubisoft ever releases ever again. Sadly, this seems like the end of MM for me

I would have liked a simple offline single player game without any online prerequisites like registration (online registration is my pet hate of the moment) Isn't it enough that you pay for the product without them trying to target you for all kinds of other junk. MM9 was an OK game but a disappointment but MMX seems to be a total let down. I certainly won't be playing it and I'm sure I'm not alone. Ubisoft take note!

Game-killing bugs.

    Fander Treespook writes:

May I ask what the other game-killing bug is? Can you possibly help me avoid it without spoiling too much?

I`ve only gotten as far as being ready to fly to the ELemental Forge in my first game.

I too wish I could recommend this game to everybody, but even though I haven`t had any real problems yet, and even though Uplay and Steam so far is a nuissance more than an actual problem for me, I don`t quite manage to get myself excited over this game. It has several good elements, but something is off.

Maybe it`s just me not wanting to fall from too great a height when disappointment eventually strikes...

    Ossie writes:

I've hit two in two playthroughs (partial, obviously).

First is option for Lev to fly to Elemental Forge greyed out. Nothing you can do to avoid this one. Was originally thought it had something to do with having the pre-access version as this is where the game stopped, and a glitch when upgrading to the full version. I never had pre-access & avoided it when I had my first playthrough, but struck it on my second, & that was the end of the game. So it seems completely random, which is incredible

Second is to avoid going into a dungeon called Tomb of a Thousand Terrors before you get the quest to do so

Also the naive trust of gamers ,who by paying for the Early-access have insured the greedy bosses that they would get their profits from the game so they have not bothered to invest more money into finishing it .

Speaking for myself, I was perfectly prepared to wait. I would have infinitely preferred 3DO to have taken the extra 3-6 months needed to complete M9 properly. I always did - and still do - believe that the labourer is worthy of his hire, and I actively prefer to pay for the game, or the ebook, or whatever. Because if we buy from the pirates, or support them in any way, then we deny the support to the people who design the game, or write the books, that we love. And without that support, the future games, or books, will not be created, and we will all lose - including the pirates. I have been waiting for one of Larry Niven's books - the Moon Maze Game - to become available in electronic format outside the USA, which hasn't happened yet. It's available in pirated copy, but have I taken it? Hell, no! I shall wait, and if it doesn't arrive, I shall do without.

The pirates have forgotten the principles of enlightened self-interest in favour of the rank stupidity of taking short term gains instead of long term profits. I would quite happily see the pirates propped up and shot. And the patrons of this board all think the same way. So apply your criticism elsewhere, because in this Tavern, you are preaching to the converted. No true fans of MM6-9 or HoMM3-4 would behave in the way you describe. So they can take it elsewhere.

Then I will explain it :
02/18/2014, 17:17:39

    Zlatan the Green writes:

I was saying that the fans criticism and non-acceptance of HoMM4
and MM 8-9 led to such negative attitudes towards both series that people with unstable morale were inclined to get those games by piracy .
That period also was ruined for all game developers since piracy had no way to be halted .
The first realistc counter-measure STEAM appeared at the end of 2004 . But let leave this eternal piracy dispute aside.

My main idea is to say to 3DO critisism of players -
Now you can enjoy Ubisoft'MM ,when it occasionaly functions' .
