It disappeared before I could reply. So...the Winter Rose quest is not random and the location (kriegspire) is not correct.

Chlala did it -- one of those 'oops' moments late at night. You wouldn't believe the amount of spam we wipe off these boards. It would be worse if we didn't resort to blocking the worst IP address sources.

But mistakes happen and we're sorry. I'm glad you got an answer, though.

I think I would believe how much spam you and Chlala clear out each day.

They estimate that about 45% of all emails sent are spam, and I suspect that's far less than the number of attempts to post on boards like these.

I remember opening my mailbox one morning and finding over 900 posts waiting to be read. And that was nothing compared to what happened to my wife's mailbox. When the spammers found her address, IIRC she was receiving emails at a rate of about 80 per minute. We had to abandon that address completely.

Thanks guys - no harm

I live in constant fear, every time you put your email address somewhere to sign up to something, or it being the one which floods my inbox with rubbish. I have friends who use a separate email address for anything- *anything* - that requires you to give it to anybody not a human. I haven't gone that far yet, due to the impracticality or having to continue checking 2 addresses, but geez it's tempting sometimes

I've been doing that for years.

I keep my main email address off any system that is at all likely to be searched by these blasted web-crawlers. Believe me, there is nothing quite like opening your mailer one morning to be greeted with the news "You have 937 new messages".

and if I was establishing a new email address today that's certainly what I'd do. But so far the inconvenience of having to remember to check 2 separate email addresses is outweighing the inconvenience of having to clear spam. Part of this is gmail's spam filter being absolutely second to none - I don't think it's ever - *ever* - let something through. Any rubbish goes straight to the Spam folder rather than the Inbox & you might remember to check it once every few weeks just in case anything legitimate has been caught. It's clever, it learns, & if it ocassionally does send real email to the Spam folder (which is only ever something like many Facebook notifications coming through in a short time), you can tell it "Not Spam" and it doesn't catch it again.

    Here endeth the gmail plug

I've had at least two email addresses for years. I've got my "home" address, but when I started posting on "public" boards I got another one. I started out with a hotmail address, but there wasn't much traffic on it, and Microsoft cancelled it

I then went on to a Lycos address. This was very good for a while, but then it started getting difficult to log on, and was often dreadfully slow when I could get access. The the Russian spammers found the address (I had emails with some fascinating offers - isn't it amazing what some people think you will believe? ) so I abandoned that one and went on to googlemail, later transferring to gmail. I've found the email very good and like you, I get virtually no spam on it.

There's one thing I do regret about abandoning the Lycos addy, though. I lost the details about the slowest email I ever received. I complained to a webmaster in New Zealand about one of his members; as near as I can remember it was in about 2000. He replied fairly promptly - the time and date were on his email - but I didn't receive it until about 2007. The actual dates are a bit foggy in my mind after all this time, but the figure I remember for the delay is 7 years 2 months and a few days. What happened to cause that delay I have no idea.

I have lately developed some reservations about Google, though. I don't like the way they try and collect data about the people who post on their boards, and I was very disturbed about the way their camera vans took data from unsecured wireless networks when they were taking the photographs for their "street view." I simply don't believe them when they say that it happened by accident. Do they seriously expect us to believe it was accidental that the relevant software got (a) written and (b) installed in the camera vans? It's enough to make a cat laugh!

And I suspect google/gmail is still one of the "better" ones for that sort of stuff. Anyway I am pretty careful about what I give me real address to & hopefully everything else can just stay on my surfing address, which I can abandon if necessary

I'm a firm believer in privacy, although I haven't gone to the lengths of installing PGP to use on my emails. At least, not yet!

We get all these alarming stories about identity theft, and yet there are millions of people disclosing just about everything on social sites like Facebook! IMO, it's just asking for trouble.
