Something which DOES work!

    OK, I found a fix.

The problem is that the sound library file (mss32.dll) is compressed with Shrinker, a commercial program that just doesn't behave well. The logfile SHRINKER.ERR was a tipoff. If you search the Web, you'll find a whole bunch of people having problems with programs that use Shrinker, which hasn't been updated since 1998. So it needs to be decompressed.

    Download this utility:

    ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/sac/pack/dshrnk16.zip

and use it to expand mss32.dll. The new file should be 397,312 bytes; that's about 230K larger than the original, but I suppose you won't mind the extra hard drive space used up.

Might and Magic VI should now run. Don't forget to change the turn rate to "Smooth". I do not why NWC compressed this and not the main executable, which would have saved more hard drive space.

Maybe we could package the decompressed DLL and the v1.1 executable (for those automatically-opening doors that don't in v1.2) into an unofficial v1.21 patch for MM6 on the Patches Scrolls Web site? (They carry the unofficial MM9 patch after all.) I don't know who has the clout for this though.
