Character tiers?

If you had to arrange the character from most powerful to least powerful combat wise, what would your list look like? Looking for a discussion, not a internet fight. Or maybe a list of most Useful to least useful? (that list might a bit different.) I didn't list them all because some are hard to put in specifc order.
    Best
    1. Dragon/Wyrm (crazy powerful/accurate standard attack)
    2. Knight/Champion (Best armored, best meleer, excellent skill set, *repair skill*)
    3. Lich (the best magic user) regeneration
    ..
    Lowest on the list...
Dark Elf (takes hits like a chump) (gm in chain and bow is sweet though)
Minotaur (not very useful overall class) (weak magic user) (can't wear certain armor) (axe is nice weapon though)

It depends on how you prefer to fight.

If you're referring to physical combat, you're probably right.

However, if you use the Dark Magic combat spells, a fully developed lich is horrendously powerful. Shrapmetal will very quickly kill anything not immune to Dark Magic (more quickly than the dragon will), and the spell Souldrinker both cures your own party and does considerable damage to your opponents. My preferred party for this game is dragon, dark elf, vampire, cleric, and sorcerer.

I remember the first time I played MM8

As soon as I discovered my sorcerer could become a Lich, I was well pleased. I looked forward to the transformation and wasn't disappointed when it happened. I think liches and skeletons have character and I particularly like the tea drinking skeletons in Deyja in MM7. I don't like the mire of the damned in MM6 though because by the time I get there, I'm well beyond fighting such puny monsters. Souldrinker is easily my favourite spell.

Character tiers?

    Naal writes:

    In turns of pure damage.

    1. Lich
    Magic > Might
    2. Knight
Once you get GM Armsmaster you'll do more consistant damage than a dragon not to mention recovery time is much lower.
    3. Dragon
    4. Troll
    5. Vampire
    6. Minotaur
    7. Dark Elf
    8. Cleric
Worst damage character but has light magic buffs.

4 through 6 could probably be switched around as their damage is all pretty close.

    In terms of general usefulness

    1. Cleric
Most useful character with DOTG, HOP, and DOP. Helps increase melee damage and defense. Try to get Light magic to 60 by end game or 40 with an item of light magic.
    2. Dark Elf
Has almost all of the useful utility skills. Also can master swords or knife and the best bow user. Can master the elemental magics. Getting GM in these magics is a real pain in this game.
    3. Vampire
Can GM dagger which late in the game is the third most damaging melee attacker behind Knight and Troll. Also early in the game will attack much faster than other characters. Also has some useful skills. Can expert item and disarm trap which is more than enough if you can find items of id item and disarm trap. Can master the 3 schools of cleric magic. Can serve as primary or back up healer depending on party with shared life. Can save skill points for the cleric if they master spirit or body so the cleric can concentrate on light magic. Also has levitate which is useful in a few spots as well as for avoiding most of the traps in the game.
    4. Lich
Most damaging character and has some useful skills. Only drawback they die very easy for the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the game. Lloyds Beacon is useful but getting GM water is a pain in this game and I don't like abusing invisibility.
    5. Knight
Other than melee only useful for repair item and maybe expert disarm trap.
    6. Dragon
Can GM id item and perception and the later isn't too important. makes the game too easy
    7. Troll
Can repair gear if no knight in the party or have the knight save on skill points. Can duel wield sword and mace. Terminus works best and you can get two of them once the area respawns. Mace is bugged so adding skill points doesn't increase damage.
    8. Minotaur
Axe is bugged with reduce recovery time not working unless that's been fixed with the patch? Could use spear but if using spear might as well use a Knight. Only useful utility skill is master disarm trap and GM perception. Can expert leather, or master chain or master plate.

Done the homework, eh?

Well, we seem to agree with the knight, lich, and dragon being in the top three. And the minotaur being close to the bottom in our lists. Notice how in terms of the physical fighters the knight outclasses the two other fighters in both places in your list.

I kinda wish they gave the minotaur just something a little more, cause well minotaurs are kinda cool, even if they are half-cow.

= Mace is bugged = Mace is not, dual weapons are.

    Weapon bonuses work as documented
only for variants "double swords" and "double daggers".
In other cases i.e. (Axe, or Mace, or Spear) + (Sword or Dagger)
you get all weapon skill bonuses (higher Attack chance, less recovery) except "more damage".
There is one exception of this wildguess -
If "more damage" is stated as an Expert or Master weapon bonus,
    it does not work.
But it works for a combo "first-hand GM dagger + second-hand Sword".

Of course, level bonuses of only a first-hand weapon count in.

early stage, not the same as late stage

Early game a Dragon is king. Late game the Lich is king and it is not even close.

Knight is not worth much to me. Maybe the very early part, but late you do not really want to go hand to hand with the monsters you met.

Dragon is excellent the whole game, only issue is those rats that are hard to hit. The massive hit points make it as tough as any unit.

I agree that Monitors were a big let down. I just always recall how scary they were when you first ran into them in Homm.

Dragon vs rat
12/02/2010, 05:45:22

    Peter2 writes:

The problem is that the dragon is a big beast with what is basically a breath weapon, and once a rat (or any other small, low-slung monster) gets in close, the attacks go over its head. The only solution for the dragon is the top-level dragon ability, Wing Buffet. I know it sounds silly, but there it is.
