Prison of the Lord of Earth

    I am now attempting to free the Lord of Earth, but every time I enter his prison, the game shuts down immediately.

    Any idea what may be causing this?

Yikes! It sounds like something in the graphics chain, but I've no idea what would make the Plane of Earth special....

    You might need to replace the versions of Bink and Smacker that came with the game with the latest (and final) versions. You can download them as past of the Rad Video Tools at the link below

    Regarding that download, would I download it into my home directory for Might & Magic VIII, or should it go into one of the subdirectories?

Download and extract the files to its own folder....

    Bones writes:

    IIRC, you'll be replacing 2 files in your MM8 folder -- smacker.exe and bink.exe. First move the originals to their own folder for safekeeping. Then copy the final versions to the MM8 folder (or wherever it was the originals were).

    MM8 was designed to run under Win98, although I never had problems using WinXP. It was also designed to run at 640x480. Use those two settings. Disabling visual themes and desktop composition might be helpful depending on how you've configured your desktop.
