Might & Magic from original CD-ROM on new computers? YES!

OK, so back in April, my old computer, which I'd been running since 2007, finally got too antiquated for modern Websites. So, I finally bit the bullet and bought a new machine: a Dell. I made sure it had a CD-ROM drive.

On a whim, I decided to try installing from the old CD-ROMs MM6 and MM7, and try playing them. Amazingly, both programs work on the new machine!

I really don't like these newer CD-ROM drives; they seem to be very flimsy, and you have to wrestle with it to get the CD on the spindle thing, and to pop it off. Though, everything in the game looks fantastic on this new machine.

Some problems; you can't adjust the sound level on the main game control. You adjust one, you adjust them all. Also, in MM7, sunrise and sunset seem to mirror MM6, in that if it's hazy or foggy, you go straight from night to full day at the start of sunrise (0500,) back from full day to full night at the end of sunset (2100.) On my original Compaq machine, even on hazy or foggy days, MM7's sunrise and sunset would appear gradually over the course of the hour.

Other problem is with the new machine, I can't take screen shots. With the old one, I only had to hit one key, and it would take the screen grab. On this new one, it's some combination (Alt and two other keys) to take a screen grab. The short observation is it doesn't work with this machine; the window minimizes, and when you maximize it again, the graphics become garbled, necessitating a close and reopen of the game. Which is sad, because I was working on the MM7 Fandom Wiki when my old machine got too old to work with the Fandom site, bringing that project to a grinding halt. (I was posting screen grabs of different dungeons, NPCs, etc.)

So, if you still have your CD-ROM, you might try installing your old CD-ROMs (Provided you have them) on your newer computer. You may be pleasantly surprised!

My graphics program has a screen capture utility built in. There are other suggestions at the link below.

Screen capturing

IF I could get Print Screen to work for screen captures like on my old machines, I'd most likely be set. Problem is, that link is for Windows 10, and my system is Windows 11. I'll look more into this once summer ends, and we're closer to winter.

Also, when I've done screen caps elsewhere on this machine, it asks if I want to take one, instead of just automatically putting it on the clipboard for me to paste into my favorite art application, edit, then save as I see fit.

I should mention, my observations are for a desktop computer. I know nothing about laptop computers -- I have never had nor used one.

I'm still running MM6–8 – it won't handle MM9 – on an old (vintage 2005-ish) laptop, and I was wondering what I should do if that packs up. I really don't want to have to run the games via STEAM.
