Off-Topic, sort of

"Santa" brought me a new game for Christmas, "Wildermyth." It's a not-too-serious, cartoon-graphic RPG with maps and dungeons that are randomly created for each new game. Characters can be customized almost ad finitum. I started out with myself as warrior leader, with Peter2 as the archer companion. We met Bones in a nearby tower, where he learned that he was a mystic (i. e. mage,) when he successfully killed a monster with magic. He joined the party. After defeating some baddies on the road, we had a chance to recruit another member; thus Chlala joined our group. We suggested she become a warrior also, since you can't have too many. If we recruit someone else, we'll suggest that they become another mystic. (I just started the game today. The group is called "The TELP Regulars," pun intended.)

I've heard about that game too, and it's supposed to be absolutely great,...

My only gripe. . .

    The Elf writes:

. . . is the same one I have against everything today: no more paper instruction manuals. Having to stop a game, get out of it to fire up an on-line set of rather non-intuitive instructions and rules, then get back into the game is off-putting, at best. (It's even more fun when you're trying to find out why the toaster always burns the toast, why the microwave refuses to "wave," or what "Error 7B" means when the washing machine stops dead. Ga-a-ah!)

Okay Boomer, Gen X-er, Gen Y-er, and Millennial, I get it. I'm a card-carrying Luddite. So sue me.

But beyond all this, it's still a lot of fun. Now if I can just figure out how to get to the next area with the TELP Regulars. . . .

I can certainly understand that.

When I was playing games like Master of Magic or Master of Orion 1, I just printed the manual PDFs and kept the papers around.

However, the thing that really bugs me is that many (most?) of manuals are really shallow. Instead of what "attack" and "defense" stats do, they tell you that you do combat by left-clicking your enemy (which is something that people can find out by themselves, but how I can make strategic choices when I have no idea what does "+1 attack" or "+3 defense" do?) Instead of what the heck does the washing machine mean by "Error 7B", you get a meaningless troubleshooting section with entries like "Problem: The machine is not working. Solution: You should have plugged it into the wall."

(I guess that it's easy to write a "manual" like this and justify it with "well, people don't read the manuals anyway", and that's probably true. But it still bugs me.)

My sister used to laugh at me because before I started any new game, I'd read the manual through before I even turned on the computer. She liked to learn by doing; I preferred to learn first, then do.

Actually, the better appliances usually do have fairly decent manuals, but even that trend is going by the wayside. When I got my first Cuisinart 25 or 30 years ago, it came with: 1. a quick how-to sheet, 2. an in-depth manual and 3. a CD showing how to do everything. That was a wonderful machine, unfortunately killed by "improvements." (I put in in the dishwasher safely for 10 years, until THAT appliance died. Then I got a new one, with "improved" dishwashing powder. That stuff totally disintegrated all the metal parts that weren't stainless steel. Sigh.)
The next Cuisinart came with a "manual" that gave a parts list and many recipes, but no clear directions on how to do anything. The "directions" were on one side of a small sheet of paper with English on one side and Spanish on the other. I never did find out why it did such a lousy job of shredding potatoes or carrots.

Cuisinart
01/02/2022, 13:04:59

    The Elf writes:

(Yes, I thought about those knights when I wrote about it.)

The Cuisinart appliance was (I believe) the first food processor for home use. There had been others available only for professional chefs, but that was the first for us everyday home cooks. It was at first considered a luxury item, and was very expensive. Only rich folks could afford them. Soon other appliance manufacturers began making similar devices, so that the price came down, and many of us could now afford one of these devices. Since Cuisinart used to be the only manufacturer of food processors for home use, many of us used "Cuisinart" as a generic term, much like "Kleenex" and "Magic Marker" are (incorrectly) used. (If I could have found the ASCII code for "registered trademark," I would have used it in the previous sentence.)
If you've ever skinned your knuckles trying to shred potatoes or carrots by hand, you can appreciate the attraction for the processor for those of us who have. (Papa Elf loves to have fried, shredded potatoes, incorrectly called "hash browns" with his eggs every Sunday.)
The food processor also purees foods, chops up nuts or other solid foods, slices just about anything that is sliceable, and is in general, a pretty handy gadget to have in your kitchen. For those of us with a "thing" for peanut butter or other nut butters, it makes an excellent kind that won't separate when stored*. You can even duplicate Nutella with it. And Cuisinart USED to be the best of the lot. The best ones now are way out of The Elves' price range! So I plug along with a processor that is pretty good, but not the best.

*The trick is to keep chopping up those peanuts/other nuts until they turn shiny instead of powdery.

TELP Regulars game progress report (sad)
01/05/2022, 22:08:15

    The Elf writes:

I set all the party as being 18-21 years old (the younger, the better in this game. Characters age and actually gradually go gray/grey.) Everyone will retire after reaching a certain age. I also set them as friends (to each other.) I didn't bother even thinking about the next parameter: allow/disallow random friendships, rivalries, and romances. I found out that the computer will take care of those little details by itself!

All was going well. You start with 3 in the party, and can add 2 more. (You can actually add more than that, but can only play a maximum of 5 at a time. Bones was the warrior leading the band, while I was an archer and Peter2 was the mystic (mage.) After our first battle, we were informed that we could now recruit someone else. Chlara then joined us as another warrior. Then it got interesting. Chlara decided that I was her rival, so we traded snarky remarks for awhile. Our rivalry really paid off in battle however, since we each tried to outdo the other in fighting technique, and thus were able to increase the party's fighting power.
Then things got REALLY complicated. We came to a land of wolf god worshipers. Bones felt some sort of ancestral urge to seek out the wolf god. He left the party to satisfy his yearning. When he returned, he now had the body of a man and the head of a wolf! (He could have refused, but he said he had felt a deep need to follow the wolves.) Chlala fainted. (We later found out that she and Bones had become more than friends, but nothing x-rated.) Meanwhile, Peter2 and I became romantically involved. Unfortunately, this didn't last long, because I was maimed in the next battle. After the battle, as I lay bleeding, I had to make a choice: go through life with only one arm which for an archer might as well be doom; retire, allowing all the others to have a permanent, 2-point boost to their hitpoints; or die, giving everyone a 10-point hitpoint boost. I chose death. (The party was soon able to hire another archer: Ramillies.) Peter2 sadly built me a memorial shrine at my burial ground. Bones acquired a wolf's increased speed and ferocity. He and Chlala decided to quit the party, marry, and live in a beautiful little valley they'd discovered. Their son joined the party, with a few more stat points than the average newcomer, since he had inherited some of Bones' ferocity and Chlala's thoughtfulness. He gave no indication of having inherited Bones' wolf tendencies.
The rest of the TELPers were able to defeat the boss and restore the first area to prosperity and safety. I decided that being dead, I had no desire to watch sadly while the rest of you went on to fame and glory, despite my beautiful shrine. Good-bye.

Each game has so many autosaves, that it's pretty easy to go back and do play-overs. I "gave the computer its head," so to speak, because I was curious to see what it would do next. When one member gets flirty, there's always the option for the character on the receiving end to nip it in the bud. On the transformations (there are quite a few available besides the wolf god thing,) it's usually advantageous to go through with it, but you can always decline. Such transformations nearly always offer some advantage to the recipient. Accepting the son or daughter of an original player into the group is especially good--such members always have some stat that's superior to a freshly-rolled character.
All in all, I'm not disappointed in the game. The sale is over, but I got it for $18.74, including tax. I think it's $39.95 now. Like the various "Civilization" games, you could play it for a lifetime and not exhaust all the possibilities, so it's nearly infinitely replayable.

I met Terry Brooks (author of inter alia the Shannara books) some years ago, and asked him if he ever "gives the characters their heads", so to speak, when he is writing. He replied "No, never, my characters behave exactly as I want them to." This contrasts with Tolkein's approach – I understand when he was writing LOTR, Tom Bombadil was a sort of "organic" development; he didn't appear in any of his plans, and I don't remember seeing anything that I connected with him in Christopher Tolkein's compilations of Tolkein's earlier writings.
