I'm getting distinctly annoyed with Microsoft. Every day now, I'm getting at least one message asking me to upgrade to Windows 10. I don't want to upgrade to Windows 10. Some of my friends have already been down this route, and have hit the dreaded "Something happened" error. Matters have not moved on from there in any happy way, and at least one of my friends has gone back and re-installed Windows 8.Have none of these clowns at Microsoft ever heard of the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't mend it?" *mutter, mutter* OK, rant over!

. . . major system upgrades don't work nearly as well as starting with a clean disc and installing everything "from the ground up", so to speak. Nowadays, the only time I change my operating system is when I buy a new computer, and occasionally even that doesn't work well. I remember once having to buy a new laptop in an awful hurry, and ending up with one that ran on Vista *shudders*. NOT a good system!

Funny, I also had a laptop with Vista. Definitely not a good system. 02/26/2016, 08:08:26

I've tried it, but I don't really get on with it, and I've had problems using it on laptops when on battery power. It seemed to drain the battery faster than Firefox did, and so I now only use it when something goes wrong with both Firefox and IE.

Try Linux! 05/14/2016, 06:28:50

If you are not playing new AAA games, and mostly good old games like MM6, then I'd recommend Linux.
Just get the Ubuntu iso, put it on a USB drive with the software from pendrivelinux.com, and see if it works on your computer. If it seems to work good enough (might lack your wifi drivers in the live version), you can install it on a new EXT4 partition on your drive.
Or perhaps just try Puppy Linux, as it's made to be used from an usb drive or SD card.
Though you probably have to change your boot options in bios, to make usb-drive your first option.Anyways, once you've got Wine, you can play all the MM games right away, though you have to make sure you aren't running any of the games in windowed mode, then Wine throws an irrelevant error, which doesn't even tell you about the problem.
And for the best results, launch the game from a terminal opened in the game directory with "wine MM6.exe". Anyways, Wine is great for playing old games, much better than Windows in my experience.

There are probably lots of folks who would like to replay these games but can't because of changes in Windows. Wold you want to handle their questions? Or can you give us some links to forums where their questions might be answered?

And hopefully after my playthrough as well I myself has learned everything by just Googling, I don't have any goto-sites for learning about specific problems. Wait, that's not entirely true. I can definitely recommend the Arch Linux Wiki, for specific technical problems.
And for playing good old games, refer to winehq.org, and playonlinux.com. And as I said earlier, try Linux by installing Ubuntu or Puppy Linux to an usb drive, as those are very user-friendly, and has good forums (they are good people, hehe).

OK, so I'm going to start a new thread at the top of the board. I'll ask incremental questions so that everyone can follow along. I have limited experience with Ubuntu. I'm expecting that this will be a valuable resource for M&M fans.
