Windows 10

Just wonder if anyone else has experienced all the hours of pain and frustration that Papa Elf has in installing the free Windows 10 upgrade? Personally, I think Homer (or whoever) had it right when he said, "Beware of geeks bearing gifts!"

And as for the Win 10, I don't have any experience (being a Linux power-user for the fifth year now), but I wouldn't certainly bother. Everybody in my family takes the utmost caution not to click that "Upgrade to Windows 10" button.

(To be honest, I'm glad that the Win 8 and 10 are turning out to be a disaster, secretly hoping that M$ stops making OSs when they blow in their face too many times.)

    P. S.: Many geeks would feel offended when interchanged with Microsoft this way ...

I think I've found a way to stop the thing, at least temporarily.

First of all, the critical update is KB3035583. If it's installed itself so that icon for installing the upgrade appears on your task bar, get rid of it by doing the following:

    1. Click on the Start (bottom left corner of screen) and then on Control Panel
    2. In the next window, click on Programs (or Programs and Features if that's what its called on your set-up)
    3. In the left-hand panel of the next window, click on View Installed Updates
    4. Wait until the list populates (marked by the progress of the green bar across the top), and then locate the update of number above. (You can use the Search function at the top right if necessary.)
    5. Click on that update to select it, and then click on Uninstall, above the right-hand panel

After you've uninstalled it (you'll have to reboot to complete the job), the update will eventually (probably the following day) be re-sent to your computer. What you do then is:-

    6. Click on the Start button, and then click on Windows Update
    7. If the update is there waiting to be installed, there will be a little box on the left with a tick in it. Just untick the box. Don't delete the update, just leave it there.

I did this yesterday, and the icon calling on me to install Windows 10 did not reappear this morning. Whether it will reappear later when I reboot to install other updates, I don't know.

Nice to see that it is possible to rid yourself of it so conveniently.

I rebooted earlier today and it didn't try to reinstall, so I'm still hoping that's cracked it.

There are considerable pluses to running one's own business, but it does have the disadvantage with some things that if I don't do it, it don't get done . . .

As I remarked wryly some years ago, I can afford to die, but I can't afford to fall ill

Everybody of my acquaintance who has tried it has had endless trouble, and the one who actually managed to get it working found his computer was running 37% slower than under his original Win8.1. He has now reinstalled Win8.1.

I guess it'll be fine as a clean install on a brand new computer, but as for upgrades, leave well alone.

Remember the old adage "IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T MEND IT."

[What really seriously annoys me is to have an icon there which every so often pops up a window that says, in effect, "Please install Windows 10", and I can't get rid of it. I don't WANT Windows 10! Or at least, not yet. Sorry about that — rant over! ]
