Are artifacts unbreakable?
01/15/2015, 18:37:05

Inspired by Chandor, I've been levelling up a full party (wizard, archer, 2 knights) and finally got to the point where I could do the 20 gold dragons in the arena. It's still iffy killing them all and I spend half my time repairing things. One time I probably waited a little too long and the majority of everybody's items were broken. I have several artifacts and as I was repairing I noticed that none of those were broken, so I started keeping track.

I went through it 3 more times with lots and lots of broken items but none of the artifacts ever broke. Could be a coincidence but does anybody know if they are unbreakable?

Artifacts and relics are pretty resistant, but they are not unbreakable.

I can't remember what repair skill is needed to mend them — I do remember it's pretty high — but the appropriate shop will mend them.

Thanks. If I ever knew that I'd forgotten.

I generally get all my characters master repair fairly early on just for the convenience. In this game I also got them all to master identify and eventually put them all at level 14 master merchant, just so I didn't have to swap NPCs for selling and training.

Level 375 right now and I am never going to match Chandor. If you like doing the same things over and over and over again, I could highly recommend this. I'm not sure why I keep going.

Artifact repair
01/17/2015, 04:56:17

    Chandor writes:

Well, I can say that level 10 repair seems to be enough. I kill those dragons every week (gametime) and I don't bother healing or fixing things while I do, I just run around and shrapmetal like crazy til they're dead (takes about a minute). Once I'm done I fix everything and usually most things are broken by then (though generally not the artifacts). I've never failed to fix everything up though, never had to go to a shop.
Now level 800. Takes longer getting levels now

Are you talking about Dragonsand? I thought that respawned every 6 months. Am I wrong, or does that change later on after Enroth has been saved? Or are you talking about somewhere else, and if so, where?

I believe he's fighting dragons in the Arena. That's every Sunday and on that big level, there are just dragons.

Yup. 20 gold dragons in the Arena every Sunday, Dragonsands on the 4th of April and 4th of October every year (Paradise Valley on the 2nd April/2nd Oct, and The Temple of the Snake on the 6th march every other year. I think that's all of the dragons

At level 385 my wizard has about 2400 spell points, fully buffed
01/17/2015, 09:42:04

    Xanax writes:

That's enough for about 48 casts of shrapmetal. I can't imagine how many Chandor has at 800. I only have one wizard in my party so the arena is still something of a challenge, but one shrapmetal close up will kill any gold dragon. I usually end up with a couple of characters close to zero hitpoints by the time I'm done.

One of my goals is to be able to do the arena with no spells at all. It wouldn't be all that hard to kill them; it's surviving it that's the challenge, and of course all the repair.

Been some time since I ran out of spellpoints. I toss dragonbreaths all over the place in VARN to kill the genies at range

Well, I was able to take out the arena dragons with no spells.
01/17/2015, 15:36:26

    Xanax writes:

Was a close thing and I ended up with one character unconscious for the last 3 dragons, but I guess it's more doable than I thought. I tried it 3 different times with slightly different tactics. I thought that running around might be best, but the only thing that worked out was going into turn based mode on each dragon. Had to repair a LOT to get through it.

Not really worth the extra time to do it, but I'm glad I gave it a try. Maybe in another 50 levels or so it won't be much of a problem.

Doing it w/o shrapmetal is definitely harder
01/17/2015, 18:05:33

    Chandor writes:

But using the leap into the stands technique I could blaster the dragons into oblivion at level 120 or so. Although I also did a lot of repairing and I did use power cure spells...
Just tried using blasters to kill the dragons. Apparently if you just hold down the fire button (A) in realtime mode it only checks whether the blasters are OK when you start firing. The dragons broke all my blasters and I kept firing anyway!. Until I had to move to line up on some more dragons. Then I had to repair them before I could start another continuous fire round
I didn't need to heal, but everyone was in the red at the end. Took about twice as long as shrapmetalling. That's at level 808

The problem with using blasters against opponents with lots of hit points is that . . .
01/17/2015, 20:30:57

    Peter2 writes:

. . . they keep moving, and the automatic targeting always picks out the nearest dragon and switches to the next nearest if the first one retreats. This means that if there are a lot of them, you end up having to do fell damage to many before any of them drop. And meanwhile, they are blasting you with their ranged attacks. And blasters are useless in turn-based mode.

Shrapmetal is way better. If you really want to prove that, try using blasters to clear that lower room in the Control Center — the one with all those floating robots in it. I've had numerous attempts at it, but the Terminators got me every time, while my party's blasters hammered away uselessly at weaker units that happened to be closer. Using Shrapmetal in turn-based mode, there's no problem, because you can pick out the Terminators one by one and blow them apart, before you tackle any of the others.

I'm not using blasters, just swords and daggers and such.
01/18/2015, 06:44:51

    Xanax writes:

Actually, I threw away my blasters because they were taking up too much inventory space. If I ever decide to actually finish this game I'm going to have to hope that the control center respawns (I haven't checked in a while) or that I left a pistol in there somewhere.

With the dragons I just get up close to them one by one and go into turn based mode. One interesting thing I discovered: Sometimes they'd fly up too high and be difficult to target or they'd fly up over the stands. If you run straight at one dragon firing your bows constantly, it won't move at all. I kind of move from side to side in the arena and use that method to get most of them close to the ground. It makes it a lot easier.

Control centre does indeed respawn every 2 years.

    Chandor writes:

Fortunately I can confirm the Control centre does respawn, I clear it out on the 24th April every other year

I kept my blasters. Just having them equipped appears to make you faster oddly enough. I also kept one other weapon for each person just to play with them from time to time although I don't carry them. I use the Warlords Fortress as my storage. Plenty of chests (though every 2 years I have to move everything while it resets)

They're tougher, so harder to break

Which is probably why you haven't seen it yet. But they do break.

And it's worse in MM7, where you can't use Harden Item potions on Artifacts/Relics. So you can make normal equipment unbreakable, but not Artifacts/Relics
