Playing again
07/09/2014, 18:44:26

It's been just over a year since the last time I posted about playing again. That seems to be about how long it takes me to get the itch. Last time I ended up doing 2 or 3 'quick start' kind of games using sorcerers and a cleric for the most part and armageddoning everything.

This time I'm going with 3 knights and an archer. I started a 4 knight game a couple years ago and got to the oracle quests but stopped. Having just one caster makes a big difference.

No NWC dungeon or reloading for shops or npc's, though I am using other fountains and wells. The no reload has caused me a couple headaches but I'm getting through. Actually having a lot of fun with this. I think it's been 8 or 9 years since I actually completed a game. I'm determined to go all the way through this time.

Update and a question
07/18/2014, 18:34:51

I'll do the question first so you can skip the update if you want:

Solo games. I assume that the way you do this is to let the other party members die and then not heal them? If that's not correct, let me know. Also if you're playing solo do you get more experience for killing a creature? I'm thinking about trying a solo archer game when I'm done with this one (or maybe duo).

Update: I finished all the council and promotion quests and cleared every outdoor area except Sweetwater, Hermit's Isle and Dragonsand. I plan to (try to) do the last two and the Supreme Temple before I get to Darkmoor. My characters are level 67.

I've done Kriegspire and Castle Alamos and that was kind of odd, memory wise. I know it's been several years since I did the memory crystal quests but I remembered everything about Kriegspire down to the last detail (of course it's a pretty simple dungeon). For Alamos, however, I remembered trees and a ledge but beyond that nothing about the layout of that place was even vaguely familiar. I finally just ran around and killed everything I could find and eventually found all the trees and then stumbled onto the ledge thingy but just didn't recall all of the up and down and various things.

I think that I remember Darkmoor reasonably well but I'll be interested to find out how accurate my memory is.

I wish I'd tried this a long time ago. Really a different kind of challenge but a lot of fun.

Klaravoyia was a great devotee of games like that.

IIRC it was Klar who developed the initial positions for the peasant games, where you start with characters who have absolutely nothing — no money, and no skills.

I'm not quite playing like that.

I just killed off 3 characters when I started. How would you start with no skills? I thought the game made you select skills when you started. Also do you continue to play like that or do you level up and gain skills as you go along?

I found that my archer had mastered pretty much everything she needed by level 72 (where I am now), though I'd like to put more points into some stuff. Interesting trying to play with one high level character as opposed to a balanced party. I don't think I'm going to try Warlord's till I'm about level 100.

If you have the v1.0 game and you start out with a druid, . . .

. . . you can use the "features" of the game to give him or her all the magic skills (including the mirrored path magics) and the full range of weapon and armour skills without using an editor.

    Note: features = beneficial bugs

In a solo game, you just kill off the 3 other characters, but keep them in your party so that you can use their backpacks.

So a level 150 archer walks into Gharik's Forge..

The only reason that turned out to be easy was because you can cast an awful lot of Ring of Fire with 750 spell points, which is pretty much how I handled that (hiding around a corner). I still couldn't stand up very long to a room full of Warlocks and such; I wonder how much magic resistance is enough.

This has been an interesting game. I guess I picked a character with enough varied abilities to be able to handle a lot of things. Outdoor areas where Meteor Shower or Starburst can do the job (like Hermit's Isle or Paradise Valley) are a snap and at this level she can stand toe to toe with a Cuisinart and win (with no magic). I'm curious to see how it goes from here on out but at this point it is generally easier than it would have been with a full group at a lower level.

I cleared Dragonsand twice (unintentionally - I forget it would respawn so quickly) and Kriegspire twice also. Cave of the Dragon Riders was a challenge and took a lot of trips.

I still can't imagine doing this with a knight. A duo might be interesting. I wonder what the ideal pairing would be.

I seem to remember somebody . . .

. . . tackling this game with a party of 4 knights. IIRC he said that the game was quite playable, but travel was not easy, and anywhere you had to water-walk to, like the islands in New Sorpigal, was a pest. Places you had to fly out of, like the crater in the mountain in Hermit Isle, were a real pain. And I don't think he ever cleared all the "eels" out of Eel-Infested Waters or Hermit Isle.

Finished it.

One year and 3 months and a score of 49013. Don't remember what a good score is. As I mentioned, I play some at least once a year but it's been 8 or 9 years since I actually finished a game. My archer finished at level 181. I had saved up some points so she was skill 27 at blaster when she went into the hive.

Overall I'm not sure if this was that much more difficult than a full party game, though it was at one point early on. Varn was a real chore, but everything was reasonably doable. I pretty much cleared out Darkmoor but am I mistaken in thinking that once you do the first cube you could actually just run through and get the crystal?

I had a lot of potions stacked up and never used many of them. I had accumulated 8 wands of Shrapmetal and never used those either.

When I finished I revived my dead characters and they were able to train up to level 56, which gave me an idea. I'd been thinking about trying the solo knight game. I know I don't have what it takes to finish that, but what I'd do is get as far as I possibly could, then revive and train up the other party members so I'd basically have a full party with one super leveled knight. Anybody ever try something like that?
