Off topic: Ethics of game cracking
06/17/2014, 13:19:00

    Gedas The Evil writes:

    Hello everyone.

I am faced with an issue: I have recently (less than 5 months ago) purchased "Might and Magic X legacy" and "Might and Magic Heroes VI" via steam. What I did not check at the time was that they both come with something called "uplay".

I am running linux (have been for 8+ years and buying windows or another computer is not what I would want to do), and this "uplay" does not even load here. The games are reported to be playable when using cracks or something like that.

Now if I were to use these cracks, would that mean I'm breaking the license? If so, why?

When I bought the games I didn't expect them to bundled with something like that. Just like when buying a steak, one wouldn't even think to ask whether it was mixed with laxatives.

So the question here is: Is it unethical to try to play the games one has paid for, but in an environment the publisher does not support?

I guess I could download and run pirated versions of the games in less than an hour, but I'll probably spend my evening searching the internet for workarounds to run it legally.

Why is it the path of darkness so much easier than the path of light?

I think it's up to everyone's view of morale. My morale is simple: I paid for a game, so it is acceptable to do just about everything for being able to play it.

I don't know anything about that Uplay. Only that everyone calls it an annoying overhead (at the best). I think I would get a pirated version even on Win, if I could run the thing I bought out of the box, just to get rid of it.

My view is that . . .

. . . you have bought and paid for the game, it's your property, and you should be entitled to do what you want with it as long as you don't intend to either (a) clone it and sell copies, or (b) resell the game and keep playing it. In strict legal interpretation, you might be breaking the license, but I cannot see that it is morally wrong. All you want to do is play the game without interference. In my opinion, companies like Steam are totally unwanted interfering interlopers. Absolutely and positively the last thing I want is a company able to access my computer in a way that is not under my control. I don't want anything to do with them.

I'm thinking of getting Grimrock, but I'll buy it direct from the makers, not from Steam. If I can't do that, I'll do without it.

Peter2. You probably won't see this in time but for the next hour, Legend of Grimrock is $2.24 @ GOG.

Blast! You're right, I didn't see it in time. But thank you anyway for the effort — it was very good of you.

Spent a lot of time looking how to get them running with no success.

Now i gave up, noticed "The Witcher 2" is -80% today on steam with a Linux version, so any further attempts with "uplay" will be postponed at least for a few months until i finish this game

Anyways thank you all for your input, I won't feel that guilty if I ever try the pirated versions of these games

Following my one and only experience with Uplay, I will no longer use it or any other forced "client". If I buy a future game saddled with such nonsense, I will buy a legal boxed version & find a crack to play without the client, and have not the slightest tinge of guilt. And if that's not possible, I'm not interested in the game

I took me until today to make myself play the pirated version.

And unlike the u-don't-play version from ubisoft-steam, it runs with wine on Linux.

I have played it for a few hours, and I must say, it's quite ok. Reminds me the Legend of Grimrock a lot more than previous might and magic games though.

P.S. I hope there is a forester/mountaineer ability of flying/walking on water. I have to walk around every pebble, or something right now.
