Leveling up in MM6

I was curious, so leveling from Sorcerer to Mage gets you "an extra hit point and mp per level" and from Mage to Arch Mage "two extra... per level". Does that mean it only triggers if you are the Mage/Arch Mage when you level?

To put another way, should I try to level as little as possible until I hit my max rank, then level, to maximize hit and spell points?

Or does it not matter, because once your rank goes up it will retroactively give you extra hit/spell points per level anyway?

I've not worked it out, but in terms of points, I don't think it matters all that much.

It depends how much spellcasting you intend to do and how much damage you can take. It's a severe disadvantage if you run out of spell points, and sorcerers don't have much in terms of hit points anyway. The lift in spell points and hits points you get from the promo quests make a big difference to their abilities. I tend to promote my spellcasters fairly quickly, if that helps.

Some experimentation

I was talking generally for all classes, and just using mages as an example. I did some experimentation last night, and across three levels for my paladin and his promotion, I saw no difference in the end spell/hit points whether I promoted before or after I leveled, so Im leaning towards it not mattering.

Yes. There are formulae for computing your HP and MP, and they take only your level.

When you ascend to the higher title or rank you exactly get

what is said . For example you are level 100 you ascend from
sorcerer to mage if it says you get one hit point and one magic point per level then you will get one for each level you currently have in this example 100 of each . When you ascend the second time
system again takes your level and adds bonus points .
Suppose you level 100 and ascend second time "two extra... per level". So you get 200 hit points and 200 magic points .
Of course when you level up after that you'll get that bonus too.
