MM3--Using Mr. Wizard

Is there any penalty to using Mr. Wizard to get out of a jam? I tested it and didn't notice any gold or VP loss. What am I missing? Tanx!

In my game, there is an XP penalty.

I don't use a Robber or a Ninja in my parties, so in order to pay for "All Skills" for my characters (in this game, although not in MM4, this includes the Thievery skill), I use one of the unlisted codewords for the transport mirrors to get at some early money( ), but I have to use Mr. Wizard to get back again.

I found that there was an XP penalty when I used Mr Wizard, so now using the procedure is the first thing I do, before I have any XP, so there can be no penalty.

    Maybe your game is different?

I was wrong

I do get an XP penalty. I was paying close attention to gold and gems, but not so much to XP. After trying the Wizard again I noticed the XP loss.

BTW, I also use that "feature" to get early money. In the early part of the game, if you don't have Pathfinding and Mountaineering, money is really a drag.

Yes indeed

I made an error in the last game - apparently you have to have two characters with the Pathfinding skill before you can get into the woods, and I initially only gave it to one.

When I start an MM3 game, I try and fight my way down to Baywatch as quickly as I can to get the Pathfinding and Mountaineering skills. There's a well west of Fountain Head that is very useful in the early stages of the game. It puts your armour class (I think!) way up, so you can carve your way through the orcs much more easily. The skeletons in Baywatch give an inexperienced party a hard time, though, and a ghoul will take one apart, so you still have to be careful.

Well, but the stage when the money is not very important seems to occur very soon in the game...

Yes, there are many useful fountains and wells in A1. I frequently use the one along the road (separated by one space of water) --- that increases your HP by 100. Another one increases your Might by 20, a muddy hut on the peninsula increases your SP by 100 and another (hidden somewhere in the mountains) increases your level by 30.

But Orcs are no trouble even without those boosts. (At least I killed them fairly easily.)

It won't last.

When you get to exploring the Maze from Hell, the SW of the Isle of Fire, and the seas around the south of the Isle of Fire, the monsters are worth so much that the party members are going up levels like a monkey up a pole. By the time you reach the end-game, you will in all probability have run out of money. I remember duplicating Platinum Plate Armour and selling it to see if I could get my characters properly promoted.

It's worse in WoX. In some places in there, IIRC you get the option to pick gold, gems, or experience as rewards, and if you pick XP, you can run out cash comparatively early. Thing is, you need the levels, because there's a monster in there called the Phase Dragon, and boy oh boy, just is he a handful! I think I have once managed to kill him without losing any of my characters.

The only things I ever buy from the shops are ...

Incidentally, if you have a look at your starting inventory, you'll probably find that some has a couple of torches. It says they are worth 5 gp, but the shops won't buy them - they won't even take them!

I found that I've found two of them in my sorcerer's backpack.

Trying to sell it for 5, but I got grunted. So I'm convinced to use them instead of the Light spell.
And yes, the equipment which my characters wear and wield mostly fell on their heads from some trees or jumped off some mountain cavities.
After more careful study of item system, it seems that some weapons are there just in order not to be ever used. (Ex: wakizashi. Thing equivalent to a longsword, but no one can use it, except for knight, who can fight with anything, and ninja, who is useless, as it is said. My paladin used a crystal katana for two days I think. Now he got something better --- I think steel longsword...)
