When trying to run this game on my system I received the same error however prior to the error you mention you should also get a small popup window stating a minimum 30mb requirement for MM8 this is refering to your virtual memory or page file.
Right click my computer>properties>advanced>performance>settings>advanced>virtual memory>change>bump up the settings by 128mb should do the trickThe reason the sound card is causing this is due to it running a memory resident program ie sucking up all your available memory and not leaving any perceived room for the game.
