Basically, it increases your resistance against any spell which does magic damage.

    Harm

    Mass Curse
    Shrinking Ray

    Armageddon

Not all these spells are going to be used against your party, of course. Also I haven't bothered including the spells against undead. These also do magic damage, but nobody is going to cast them against your party. Dark Containment, which is arguably the most useless spell in the book, also is supposed to do magic damage. Cast it if you want, but IMHO it wouldn't be worth casting even if it cost a tenth of the spell points it actually costs.

As Djinn Kid implies, in MM6 this is a much weaker spell than the Protection against Magic in MM7 and MM8. There, the spell cast at GM level gives you immunity to certain effects. In MM6, your caster would need an enormous skill level in Earth Magic to get protection approaching that, and there would always be a chance that the spell would affect your party members.
