You can navigate the desert without the Map of the Desert, if you can figure out what really happens. Iirc its something like you`re turned 90 degress right or left for every move you make, so you simply need to compensate by turning back or walking in a specific pattenr to actually move ahead, but I don`t remember the details.It is much easier anyway to acuire the Map of the Desert that lets you walk normally (early navigation skill). You simply need to find Lord Kilburn in overland map area C3,6,14.
