(Off Topic) A little bad news. . .
06/29/2011, 21:56:48

    The Elf Herself writes:

Papa Elf and I had a major car crash Sunday morning. Papa Elf was dazed and contused, but was released from the hospital emergency ward after beaucoup x-rays were taken and he was found to have no major injuries.
I wasn't quite so lucky. I had a 2-inch gash in my scalp (took 8 stitches,) a broken scapula, a broken rib, and numerous swellings and bruises. I was released from hospital last night, and am undergoing the slow, painful process of healing (I am 74, after all.) It's better today than yesterday, though, and better now than it was this morning. Of all things, my arthritic shoulder hurts the worst. (It didn't hurt at all before the accident. Why? Who knows?)
Thank God I was wearing my safety belt! If my restrained body sustained a 2-inch head injury, I shudder to think what my unrestrained body would have suffered! I probably would be saying hello to all the Elves who have gone before, and are at that misty island in Avonlea or wherever.
So please, please, all of you, my beloved Tavern friends, fasten your seatbelts for even the shortest drive in a car. Your life may depend on it.

    Love,
    Elf

I'm so so sorry it happened, but I'm even more glad it was no worse! What on earth happened?

I shall have a large Scotch (probably Jura) this evening to drink to your speedy recovery - both of you.

Actually, (in a sense) I wasn't there. . .

    The Elf Herself writes:

We were tooling along in the beautiful Pacific Coast Redwoods area, when we saw a lot of people gazing at a herd of elk on the opposite side of the road. Papa Elf stopped, looked both ways, then proceeded to do a U-turn, when out of seemingly nowhere, a car came barreling down on us. I was blissfully unaware, having my eyes constantly on the elk herd. I heard a long tire skid (thought it was us, but it was the other guys,) then the next thing I knew, we were stopped. There was a fairly large group of people talking, pointing, excited, a fire truck, an ambulance, and two highway patrolmen. Papa Elf got out of the car (confused and contused,) and was talking to the highway patrolmen. I unlatched my seat belt, then tried to open the door, which was jammed. So I sat. After awhile I noticed blood splattered on the roof's headliner, then a few drops on the dashboard. "Where on earth did THAT come from," I wondered. "Is Papa Elf hurt?!" Soon the outdoor conversation switched to "collision," "other people in the car," "his wife," etc., none of which made sense to me. "Was there a collision? Is that why our windshield is shattered?" I thought. It was rather dream-like, with people talking outside, but with silence on my part. Finally, the firemen tried to open my door. There was a loud crash, and the window shattered under the fireman's axe. Somebody ripped the door off its hinges (Jaws of Life? I don't know.) I was taken to the hospital emergency ward in the ambulance. Papa Elf stayed with the highway patrolmen. He later was taken (by the patrolman) to the emergency ward, just as they were suturing my scalp. I was admitted to the hospital proper as Papa Elf was being checked over, x-rayed, then pronounced bruised and slightly lacerated, but otherwise unharmed. He rented a motel room nearby, then was taken to the airport by the same patrolman, where he rented a car. After collecting all our gear from the wreck, he stowed it in the motel room, then came to me in the hospital. I was held until TUESDAY, not Wednesday as I had said before.

I saw my own primary care doctor this morning, who told me to come back next week to have my stitches removed. He told me I was basically okay, albeit in a world of hurt.

Again, I love you all and think of you often, even though I can't contribute much beyond the occasional keg of beer. I'm afraid even that's a little beyond me at this point.

    Love,
    Elf

P. S. Nobody in the other car was hurt beyond minor cuts and bruises. They were checked over in the same emergency ward, then released. Thank god for that!

Yes, I agree, keep the lawyers out of it.

I'm in the IP profession, as you know, and going to court is always the last resort. I'm told by those who should know that patent cases are among the costliest and least certain of any form of civil litigation. It's always cheaper to reach some out-of-court settlement if at all possible. Of course, sometimes it isn't possible.

You might enjoy this one. I was involved in a patent litigation case in Germany many years ago, and our patent attorney told us this story. His son had recently graduated in law. A wealthy friend gave him (the son) a weather-vane as a graduation present. It was in the shape of a cow, with one silhouette of a man pulling on the tail and another pulling on the horns. The post holding the vane up was in the form of a figure in lawyer's robes, milking the cow. My acquaintance advised his son NOT to have this mounted above his house!

Anyway, as I say, Get Well Soon!

For people our age, that's not bad. I banged my head a while ago, and collected a cerebral haemorrhage in consequence. I don't think there's been any permanent damage, but it took me over 5 months to recover.

If you get a persistent headache after your accident, do not delay in taking yourself off for a CT scan. Once they start, things can happen awfully quickly.

I've been using Gene's computer a bit lately, so haven't been keeping up.

I'm happy to tell you (and everybody else) that I'm now able to dress myself, though I still don't have full use of my right arm. It's gradually improving, though. (I can't reach up over my head or swing my arm back beyond an inch or so past my shoulder. This is 'way better than a couple of weeks ago, when I couldn't even get into and out of bed without support.)

Thank you, Bones, and all of you for your kind wishes and prayers. I love you all !

"Walking the tightrope"
07/23/2011, 12:44:27

    The Elf Herself writes:

Yes, that's what they told me at the hospital pre-release interview. I call it "walking the tightrope" because it's sort of a fine line between pushing the muscles/skeletal structure vs. straining them. It has to hurt, but not be agonizing. (I overdid it about a week after. I was feeling better, when I reached around to fasten my seatbelt. Something went pop, and the pain was almost debilitating for a day or two. I've since taken things more slowly, but steadily.)

There's a friend of mine who's been ill for a while. I've been trying to get in touch with him, but nobody is answering the landline and his mobile goes straight to voicemail. I'm beginning to get more than a little concerned.

It's a so-and-so when you get to the age at which you start losing your friends!

But I'll add my advice to Bones' - do what the physio tells you, even when it hurts. I know this sounds awful, but if it isn't hurting, it isn't helping. I broke my elbow when I was young, (in the days when they used to immobilise the joint for a long period until the bone healed) and it was months before I could straighten my arm again.

And we all love you, too! We can't cope without our brewmaster!
