    The most I could do was donate 10 times at Temples to get a green "Neutral" Reputation.

    Slightly off topic/wrong board, but in MM7, you could donate at a Temple 10x to raise Rep. to the maximum "Neutral", then complete Quests to raise the Rep. to Friendly and Liked. Charles Quixote offers to promote in Wromthrax's Cave after slaying Wromthrax, but you can ignore him and go to a city to complete the quest instead, for the Rep. bonus in the city. If you complete it in the cave, you "waste" the Rep. bonus in the cave. By doing it in Stone City with all Stone City quests completed, you can get really good prices even with just expert Merchant.

    Just finished another play-through, and must say, I never bothered to look at the reputation tab once. Not sure it has any effect whatsoever, and I've never had any issues with gold in mm8, so even if it does offer discounts of some description, I doubt it's anything to worry about.
