Points to consider, re: Covid-19

Our hobby(?) pastime(?) delight(?) in computer gaming is ideal for avoiding exposure to nasty viruses out there. Of course, we should be careful to wash our hands before using a keyboard or gamepad, but otherwise gaming is a great pastime for those who by local ordinance (or preference!) practice social distancing. (Papa Elf and I have computers at least 2 meters apart, while Baby Elf uses hers in a different room.)

So carry on, folks--every game you play means that much less chance of getting a bad, bad illness. Even a simple case of flu can be deadly.

The members of our gaming group are even now busy setting up the communication linkages needed for us to play our Sunday game with the individual players in separate houses.

I also need to complete writing the next episode of my own game.

In between times, I'm also going to finish my current MM3 game, have another go at WoX (and see if I can persuade that chair in the northern Sphinx (IIRC!) to treat my Ninja more kindly), and finally have another bash at getting through the final dungeon in Swords of Xeen.

And if the weather clears up, I might even do some gardening!

    Who needs a TV?

I've been doing well myself; conditions on AM and FM radio haven't been very good, so I've been playing MM7 a bit more also. I probably should also dust off my copy of Flight Simulator X, and see if I still remember how to fly the Baron, and execute an ILS approach...it's been several years...

My digital dexterity has dropped to the point at which I have difficulty playing the games I used to play. One of the few games that I rated as highly as the Might & Magic games was Eye of the Beholder 2 – The Legend of Darkmoon. I had a go at it a little while back, but I found that my fingers were too clumsy to get through it

Another example is Minesweeper. Once, years back, I managed to do it in 92 seconds, but nowadays I find it difficult to clear it in under 200 seconds. There's no way I'd be able to manage a flight simulator.

These days, Bard's Tale is giving me fits. There's an inexpensive (around $20 U. S.)remastered version of the trilogy available now. I remember the old versions from around 1985--highly pixilated and fairly difficult. Now the graphics are up-to-date, and the games themselves are slightly modernized (auto-mapping available now, instead of drawing dungeons, frame by frame, on quadrille graph paper, SLIGHT loosening of rules, etc. The aforementioned fits are due to lack of co-ordination. Fortunately, the games are truly turn-based, so there's no fighting the clock!

Incidentally, according to the discussion pages, many players wax nostalgic about M&M, too. Hmmm. I wonder if Inexile would be interested in remastering any of our old faves?

I've got the DOS versions of MMs 1-6 and SoX from the MM6 Limited Edition that I bought in ca. 1998.

Dosbox enables me to play MMs 3-6 and SoX, but its present set-up won't cope with MM1 or MM2. I've got an old (vintage also ca. 1998) laptop on which I can play MMs 6-8, but it won't run MM9. That's not a huge loss, although I shall miss the Chasm of the Dead and the Lich Lab.

I've had to replace my desktop and upgrade the software in my "modern" (ahem! – Win7 vintage) laptop, so my working computers now run under either Win10 or Win98.

Oops! I mean, of course, MMs 1-5 not 1-6 . . .
