Progress report (sort of)
07/01/2019, 13:13:14

    The Elf Herself writes:

Since so many of you have said you were able to install the old games (MM's 6 thru 9) in Windows 10, I thought I'd give it another go. As I've said before, my computer wouldn't recognize the disks' existence, hence wouldn't install them. That was in Windows 7. I assumed that they also wouldn't work in Win 10, since it was even more advanced. But this morning I got out my old Might & Magic Millennium Edition 6-disk bundle pack. I'd already given my sister the old single-box versions, complete with manuals. I didn't give her any paper maps, either commercial or hand-drawn, nor did I give her the Prima Guides. (For you youngsters, Prima Guides were 1+ inch [2 to 4 cm.] thick books with tips on character creation, lists of monsters and spells, and maps for various games. They used to cost about $20 US for a $30 US game. There were no games forums, message boards, wikis, or other means of getting you over that puzzle or monster you just couldn't seem to tackle! There were only a few hints in a very few monthly gaming magazines, and Shay Addams' monthly "Questbusters" pamphlets. One hint-giver, Scorpia, whose monthly column appeared in the long-dead "Computer Gaming World Magazine," was immortalized as a monster in MM3.)
So out of curiosity, I put the Millennium disks, one by one, into the drive. To my surprise, they installed!

So now the dilemma: I've got MM6 and 7 installed on my 'puter, but I can't play them. (MM's 4, 5, and Xeen just wouldn't install at all, but I didn't really expect them to.)
What do I need to do? I know there are patches and work-arounds out there, but I don't know what all of them are. I'd really, really like to play MM6 outside of Steam, the online service you love to hate, and hate to love. Thank you. (And a free keg of Elf Ale for all you helpers!)

I have around 30 mm6 game folders on external and backup hard drives. They all ran under win7. I recently upgraded to win10 v1903 and following has gotten them running...

Sometimes I get a DDraw error and sometimes a message saying to reload.

    First try
    1) right click mm6.exe
    2) at top left click "Run as administrator."

    Second try
    1) right click mm6.exe
    2) at bottom left click "Properties."
    3) at top left click "Compatibility."
    4) left click "Run this program in compatibilty mode." (Try default win XP.)
    5) left click "Apply" and then "OK."
    6) left click mm6.exe.

First run requires watching entire start up movie. Once it starts running I generally shutdown and restart my computer to make sure game still starts.

If these don't work drop me an email w/ your phone number (I'm in Oregon) and I'll email my number back to you. If you get my answering machine just leave message. I don't answer phone numbers I don't recognize.

I haven't tried getting any of my mm7 folders running yet but expect same will work on 6-8.

I play using Grayface's patches for many good reasons (windowing, quickloads, quicksaves) but mainly because I love trying different things (cheating) in single player computer games.

I can't believe it: MM7 is running just fine from my old Millennium disk--correct speed, and all. I've created a party and played a few minutes.

I'll give your tips on MM6 a try. As I recall, the Millennium disk set cleared up some bugs that were in the original release. It would be nice to play it outside of Steam! (I went screaming and kicking into Steam, but just had to have it for The Elder Scrolls, which I fell in love with after being shut out of Might & Magic for so long. I also had to have Civilization 6, which I don't like at all--but Civ 5 has a lot of add-ons in Steam that make that game worthwhile.)

MM6 and Oregon

I took your suggestion, and am now playing with you as a cleric, Ramillies as Paladin, Peter2 as archer, and me as Sorcerer. I've leveled us all up to 3 (but we're still in New Sorpigal two weeks after "birth.") (Chlala was originally archer, but she doesn't seem to hang out in the Tavern much anymore, so Peter2 won out.) The game did crash once, but not to desktop--the action just froze. After playing a lot in Steam, I'm used to it.

Papa Elf's late parents moved from L. A. to Brownsville, then Albany, so we visited them from time to time. (Not Texas and New York, silly--Willamette Valley!) After that, we used to go to Grant's Pass every year for an outdoor silhouette pistol match. You people really have some righteous brews up there--love those Cascade hops!

Now my problem is, how do I toggle run/walk? In Steam it's done with the Caps Lock key, but that doesn't work here. Thank you again for your help, and here's that Elf Ale I promised!

Just tested and running only occurs when shift held down in mm6 v1.0, v1.1 and v1.2, no caps lock run. Mok's patch...

revised mm6(exe) to allow new mm6(ini) file w/ AlwaysRun=1, FlipOnExit=0 and LoudMusic=0 options which must be version GOG and Steam use.

If you're going to patch I recommend you browse for "Grayface", go to Sergey's site and download his new mm6 2.3.1 patch.

Rather than patch your current game folder, rename your current game folder to MM6-1.2, create new MM6-2.3.1 folder, copy entire contents of MM6-1.2 into MM6-2.3.1 then run 2.3.1 patch in MM6-2.3.1 folder.

There will be a patch readme txt file that you can read to begun to understand the possibilities. You can also open mm6(ini) file w/ notepad and see default switches. Disc isn't required to run game but w/o disc you won't have music unless you set up music folder w/ ripped music files.

I concur that there are a lot of great brews here but there are now great brews everywhere in the country (w/ possible exception of Missouri, home of AB.)

What an honor, to be the one who often has to drag his three unconscious comrades from the dungeon while fighting off enemies!

Anyway, run/walk can be toggled in Grayface patch (I'm not sure if it adds it by itself, or if this functionality is a part of the Mok's patch which is included in Grayface's). In vanilla MM6 (or with the official patches only), the only way to toggle between run and walk is to put something heavy on your Shift key .

Small world. I attended 74-76 and 78-80 so missed you. Back in the day when you could earn enough during summer to pay all expenses for year if frugal.
