Old-timer now a newbie

    The Elf Herself writes:

I copped out and started playing MM6 in Steam, where it's an extra feature of MM10. Unfortunately, while I still have all my hand-drawn maps and even a few of my progress charts (with characters named Finland's Crazy Bear, Peter2, Greate Pier, Fruit Fly, Flamestryke, and Ribanna, *big sigh,*) I gave away the original games (with their manuals. I still have the game disks, though, having bought the big, bundled CD's of games 6 through 8 on sale, at about the turn of the millennium. Then I didn't need the manuals, having memorized how to do almost anything in the games. But alas, I've forgotten meanwhile. With a little patience and experimentation, I figured out how to use spell books and cast spells, but some interactions escape me. I know how to set up a quick spell, but how do you cast it? I've tried all the tricks I can think of, but I still can't cast the spell that's highlighted as quick. I end up having to click on it from the book, then cast it the long way, while the goblins cut my poor, inexperienced crew to ribbons.
Another thing is leaping. IIRC, once you have the flying skill, you simply cast it, and use the page up/page down keys for navigation. But leaping doesn't have an obvious trigger. (I'm trying to get into the New World Computing headquarters, so I can deal with Jon van Canegham and Trip What's-His-Name, and get all the freebies therein. I know where the magic spot is on that particular eave on that particular building. Another thing: my archer has a crossbow on his back and a dagger in his hand. How do I have him use the right one? 'Tis a puzzlement.

I have several m&m game bundles and they install PDF versions of the manuals.

Original individual games probably only had printed manuals (only original single game I have is mm6 v1.0.) I just did a clean upgrade to Win 10 Pro v1903 on my old desktop. Games (mm6 v1.0, v1.1, v1.2, Mok's and various Grayface patches are installed on external USB drive so no reloading required. When I tried to run under new Win 10 several (non-grayface) versions got a DDraw failure. Setting compat of mm6.exe to Win 7 got them running. Win 10 also stretched original 640x480 to full width and height on 16:9 display. I noticed that Grayface has new 2.3.1 patch versions for mm6, mm7 & mm8 which offer many features I enjoy. W/ exception of original mm6 v1.0, which has several amusing features.

Easy...

    Ramillies writes:

The key "A" makes the character use a weapon to hit the closest enemy in view (melee or bow, depending on how far it is). If no enemy is in view and range, the character shoots the bow dead ahead, or if they haven't a bow, they don't do anything.

The key "S" makes the character to 1) cast a quick spell (if it is an attack spell, then it's aimed at the closest enemy, as with "A"), or, if you don't have any, 2) use the weapon as with "A".

(By the way, if you set area-of-effect spells as quick (like fireball), you can seriously hurt yourself, so take care. Ditto for wands with such spells.)

The archer uses the right weapon automatically. If the monsters are in melee range, the party will use their melee weapons. If they're not in melee range, but still in bow range, they will shoot bows at them.

You can jump a bit using "X". It's mostly useless, but the funny physics can make wonders. I remember a "New Sorpigal roof challenge" that I randomly came across — the task is to start on the roof of the inn and go over all the buildings in the New Sorpigal proper (not the temple and guilds, of course) using jumps only. And it's doable.

Thank you, Ramillies and Ragwort!

IIRC, you have to leap up to touch the brick on the eave behind the tree to get to the NWC Headquarters.

Is there a quick save at all? (The usual RPG F5 or F8 don't do anything, so I assume that F9 won't, either.)

One thing bothers me. I seem to remember (perhaps falsely?) that turn-based combat was automatic, and that you had to press a key for free-for-all combat. Now it seems you have to press "enter" for turn-based. (Steam has a very bad habit of changing things in games "from outside." Case in point: if you're also an Elder Scrolls fan, Steam's Oblivion in Win10 makes it impossible to progress in the Fighter's Guild quests, beyond about the first two.)

There is no quicksave, unless you have GrayFace patch installed.

    (Which you most probably don't.)

As for the automatic turn-based combat, I'm afraid your memory is indeed playing tricks on you. MM6 has been always real-time as far as I can remember, except for the cases when you hit Enter to enter the turn-based mode (where you cannot move, only whack monsters).

Can I play the "age card"?
06/25/2019, 01:15:48

    The Elf Herself writes:

At my age, I'm astounded daily about things I thought I remembered differently. (My doctor agrees with me though: as long as I'm able to laugh at myself, I'm okay.)

I remember MM6 as being slightly difficult, but not too. Whoa! I've died at least six times since I started playing two days ago. This game is actually tough! (However, I did correctly remember the location of that Fly spell scroll, and was able to open the gates in Goblinwatch without reading the hidden scroll. Now I'm trying to remember which corner of the dungeon had the hidden suit of armor.)

True to form, I'm on my fourth party of adventurers in two days. Every RPG I've ever played, I start and restart numerous times, trying for j-u-u-u-st that perfect combination of characters. Knight or Paladin? Druid, Cleric, Sorcerer, Archer--which ones? Can't hire them all!

In short, I'm having a blast playing one of my old favorites. It has all the things I've always loved in RPG's: a touch of humor, puzzles to solve (with hints, if you hunt for them diligently,) and lots of loot in unexpected places.

(And no, you can't use GrayFace in Steam.)

You can

    Ramillies writes:

But it has a bright side to it as well: if you've forgotten everything about the game, you can experience it "for the first time" for the second time! Just ask Peter how much he would like to be able to do that .

So if you don't remember how it works and what to do, I'd say that you have a great chance to just explore around and have fun, instead of just going through a list of things to do, which is something that at least I tend to do when I know the game too well. (Which is why I'm not going to play MM6 anytime soon, and when I get through MM7, I will play it once more and then probably leave it for a good chunk of time.)

Dirty little secret

Ramillies, I don't know by how much, but I do know I'm older than Peter2. (And I gather that you're probably approximately my grandson's age.)

I know.

    Ramillies writes:

I just wanted to say that you can use the curse of forgetfulness to experience the game with a fresh mind once again, which is, in my opinion, where the game has the most to offer.

(A couple of months ago, I started a MM7 playthrough and Peter said that he would so much like to experience the game without knowing anything about it. So that's what I was referring to.)

MM7 (sigh)
06/26/2019, 12:31:12

    The Elf Herself writes:

I purely loved MM7, maybe even more than 6. And yes, I do remember a lot of how it went. I still have all my hand-drawn maps, indicating which barrow teleported you to whatever other barrow. You could again go to NWC Headquarters and thwart JVC, but it wasn't nearly as rewarding as the one in MM6. (And I never could master Dark Magic.)

I read letters posted in this site (I guess there's still problems with the MM7 site,) saying that the game is too hard. I remember there are certain tricks to getting started and earning quick cash, but I can't remember them all. Only once was I able to pull off the "beginning party vs. dragon" trick, which can give some really good loot right off the bat. The other times I tried, I gave up after 6 or so fatal outcomes! Yes, those dragonflies (or whatever they're called) are a pain, but there's a trick to managing them, too, which also gains you quite a bit of gold, for a beginner.

I actually liked MM8 more than did my fellow TELPers. (Probably because I finally got to play an Elf, albeit Dark.)
We all liked the tribute that New World Computing gave to well-known, fallen people who had spent a lot of time and energy helping other players, but who were now gone. Flamestryke was one. Lord Brinne was another. He was also honored in Bethesda's Morrowind by having a powerful ring named after him. There were a lot of "Easter eggs" in 8, such as treasures hidden in certain trees. And when we brought home a "jade" dragon figurine from China, I immediately named it "Ithilgore."

*sigh* Yes indeed. A good memory is very useful, but it does have some disadvantages.

For one thing, it reduces the number of times that you have to think for yourself, rather than remembering a similar situation and adapting the remembered solution to fit. You remember a lot of your own silly mistakes too . . .

So what have you been doing, in the past few years?

I had a divorce as well and contact with my ex is now better than it's ever been, which is just as well for our little boy of course... so yeah... not really much special going on

Hmmm I'm not sure I know what that means, or if I even ever will... I've never been that big on games that rely on lightning reflexes and pinpoint accuracy... which is probably why I prefer Dragonbreath and Shrapmetal if up close and personal haha
