MM7 Issue with sound

I just started replaying MM7 again after many years. I'm attempting the Maestro Mod and currently am in Harmondale. I tried to set Deadly Swarm as my default spell for my mage and received a curious error message that said something like sound for deadly swarm explosion is 13016 bytes and exceeds buffer of 8500 bytes. The game crashes at that point.

Any ideas or advice on how to fix or work around? Thank you.

Sadly, I have no idea how to fix that, though the error message pretty much says it all.

I'm still going through MM7 for the first time, and it will be a couple of more playthroughs at least until I try any mods...

That's very strange....

Sound cards could routinely handle such a file when the game was released years ago, so I'm guessing that your system is somewhat limited. That probably means that your sound hardware is on your motherboard. If you're playing on a laptop then there's probably nothing you can do, although there *might* be a setting in the BIOS that lets you expand the sound buffer.

If you're not on a laptop then you should be able to add a sound card. You'd just need a basic one. They're inexpensive and come in all the different bus and height configurations. Your motherboard might even have a mini PCIe slot specifically provided for users who need to add a sound card.

My thoughts are entirely different from those of Bones...

but either could be right (or both wrong).

I thought that the error message referred to some buffer within MM7, so if the mod replaced some sounds, they would be perhaps larger than the buffer. So, from this point of view, there are three possibilities:
    1. The mod contains a patch that would address this, but you didn't follow the correct installation procedure.
    2. It's just a bug in the mod.
    3. It's something entirely different.

If the mod indeed did change some sounds, you could go back to the original game and use the original sounds. If not, then Bones is probably right .
