The night the ol' Nostalgia burnt down

(This harks back to "Load * 8, 1" days)

Papa Elf and I recently were having a (ahem!) "friendly" family dispute about computer game history. Background: for some reason, he has loved all things Elder Scrolls ever since Morrowind, and has perversely resisted all things Might & Magic. (Heresy! n'est-ce pas?) He maintains that Bethesda pioneered the concept of building/improving a dwelling you "earned" in the game back with Morrowind. But I'm very, very certain it was in one of the earliest M&M's, but I can't remember which. Was it MM1 or MM2? I know it was earlier than MM3, because I remember plotting out maps on graph paper back then. Bones, Peter2, (or any other TELP fan who came aboard back before Jobs even thought about a windowed display,) can you help me here? There was some sort of castle you could earn by fulfilling some quest or other, but you had to buy improvements for it. Thanks for any help! (And here's another keg of Elf Ale for the Tavern!)

I started out with the adventure games. The first one I really got to grips with was Colossal Caves. (I dabbled with Zork, but in those days I didn't have access to a computer big enough to run it, and by the time I did, I'd moved on.) I played a number of the Level 9 games – I particularly enjoyed Lords of Time and later wrote an AD&D adventure based on it – and also relished the first three Space Quest adventures. However, I hit the buffers with Space Quest 4, which I thought was just plain silly. How the blazes you were supposed to work out logically what to do with that b****y rabbit in the opening scenario baffled me then and still does so now, and I came to the opinion that if the rest of the game followed this pattern, then I simply wasn't interested any more.

I then went on to RPG games, starting with New Worlds' Tunnels and Trolls. That was OK, but I found that I much preferred the first person view RPG games, especially the Might & Magic series and the first two Eye of the Beholder games. I played those and a few others (e.g. Bane of the Cosmic Forge and Ultima Underworld a number of times, but by then I was running my own business, so time was at a premium and I had to prioritise what I spent it on. I never really got round to exploring more widely. Hell, I even had to cut down on my reading, and for a guy who had been reading on average at least a book a day since the age of 15, that was a real sacrifice!

Strategy games, world-building, and most first person shooters left me cold, although I did enjoy Hexen.

They seem to be Windows-compatable versions, so no issues with compatability. Listed as "Forgotten Realms - The Archives - Collection One".

Also Darkest Dungeon on special for $9, which I can highly recommend and am thoroughly enjoying ATM if you like something a bit different!

anyways, the first MM game where you can actively or passively build anything directly or indirectly was clouds of Xeen, mm4. It was how you achieved the xeenslayer sword, when you excavated your castles basement. the game pushed you to go into dungeons by awarding mega tokens or something like that to upgrade the castle with for completing them.

I went over all of the maps and stuffs, and i cam not seeing anything that you 'build up' or upgrade in any way. Nor is tere anything like that in MM1, ( dont make me actually go look, that game was.. a bit painful, and not advanced enough to allow for a turnip to be upgraded

First time you could get a castle of yoru own was in mm4 when you could buy a desroyed castle and repair it after the Lord Xeen destroyed it to prevent the Xeenslaying sword from being used on him. you could buy the castle and then upgrade it with mega tokens or somethings. This was before morrowind came out, pretty sure, since bethesda had just released that atrocity they called battlespire and morrowind wasnt a glint in their eye yet. World of Xeen was a fair bit older than people think.

On a related note.. I am looking for maps for mm2, cause, i am just way too lazy to be actually makign my OWNmaps, cause.. reasons.. i am lazy. Does anybody know a still functional site that actually has sorted mm2 maps that are anotated? the clue book such so much eggs in this regard
