. . .on the day itself, since I think I'll be pretty busy. So this is just to let you know that in a few days I'll turn that corner and no longer be a septuagenarian. I think I'm probably the oldest female gamer around. (Papa Elf may be the oldest, period. He'll turn 87 this summer.) To quote the Grateful Dead, "What a long, strange trip it's been!"

Old? We Elves live a long, long time 03/11/2017, 10:49:05

The Elf Herself writes:
Elf the Brewer has now made it to that mystical human age: 80. Of course, The Elf Herself is over 1285 years old, having been born long ago in Skara Brae. So here's a keg of Elf's Own Ale to cheer everybody up. (No, silly, it's not 80 proof! Unless you want it to be. Even so, it will still leave you with a blood alcohol level of zero.) So drink up, and cheers! With much love to you all,
Elf

What happened? 03/28/2017, 00:37:54

The Elf Herself writes:
Peter, I e-mailed you, but I don't know whether you received 1) a letter, 2) a forwarded copy of the same letter, or 3) nothing at all. I wrote the letter, but Steam kidnapped my computer (again) and decided that updating itself was much, much more important than anything I had in mind. This left me with no means of sending the letter (quite lengthy), which is why the forward. Anyhow, thanks for the birthday wish. My birthday was fabulous!

After all these years, I am still amazed by the idea that an Ale can has variable alcohol content. 03/24/2017, 11:12:21

Variable alcohol content 03/27/2017, 23:12:26

The Elf Herself writes:
Fact, not joking around. Apparently, the U. S. A. never really got over Prohibition. While the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, and Tobacco set standards for alcohol, all 50 states have their own ideas about how to enforce those standards. Here in California, alcohol is illegal for anyone under 21 to consume, purchase, or possess. Anyone supplying alcohol to a minor can be held liable under the law. But we're far from being the most stringent. Some states will not allow the public to purchase alcohol for consumption off the premises except in state-run liquor stores. Others allow 18-year-olds to drink wine or beer, depending on the alcohol content. Other states allow ale and beer, only with fairly low alcohol content. Thus 4.2% "beer" or "ale." I could go on and on, but this is why there is so much variation. It's also why many good brews are only available in their own states: many smaller breweries simply can't afford to bottle/can (or brew!) 14 or 15 different alcohol contents for sale outside their state. (The big guys like Anheuser-Busch and Guinness are big enough and wealthy enough to handle it.) Since Elf Ale is whatever you prefer, and will never make you fail a breathalyzer test, I never worry about it!

You're right--it has been a long time. (And the Wicked Tinkers have promised to serenade me when I turn 90.)Glad to hear from you. What are you playing these days? Papa Elf and I got the special (only $2.49!) Morrowind on Steam, which I've been playing a lot lately. Funny, it isn't as great as I remember it. I think modern graphics and other tech has done it in. Have you retired yet? The Elf P. S. As you can see, I forgot the "F" in the e-mail address, but decided to leave it as is.

The problem with too many games is the apron strings attached! 12/24/2017, 09:13:37

The Kiwi writes:
I hated Steam the first time I came across it, and abhorred Origin even moreso when that abortion showed uP! I didn't even try Bethesda's releases after they adopted Steam, so no Skyrim. The Witcher games had to do it for me, although those aren't my style. I try to visit this place at this time of year, even if I haven't had any M&M game installed on any PC in quite a few years! Shoot, I haven't even had a computer able to play a half-modern game. It's a good thing that Pillars of Eternity doesn't required a high powered machine, but I did build a PC, to about 2012 standards. I'd thought you had less than a decade on me, Elf, but my memory being appropriate to my age, probably I knew better and preferred to remember an alternate view of the age difference!
