Hi, I'm starting a sorc + druid party.

This is the first time I'm posting here (well, I did respond to Peter2 today), but I've known about it for a long time.

As I think that not having a healer would be too annoying, so I have a druid, which will be casting some elemental spells as well.

I made a speedrunning party the last time I played, thinking I might upload it to Youtube. But I didn't play often and lost focus. And you need focus for a speedrun.
In my speedrun, I got the best bows from Dragonsand right off the bat, or two of them, and supplemented with two other in Frozen Highlands (using the trick of saving right before the shop, and reloading).
This way I could do some of the higher level low-level quests, to get gold and exp.

Anyways, for this party, I will just see how it goes, sort of... just enjoying the game.
This is the first time not playing a full party, and I've replayed this game every year since a decade ago, or something like that.

I hope it will work out...

I'm not sure if you realise this, but unless you have a Priest or Paladin, you'll be short of one very important spell.

You won't have Town Portal. Lloyd's Beacon is a very much more limited spell in this game – there's only one destination per caster.

Peter, I'm confused.

Town Portal is a Water spell, which sorcerers have but Paladins or Priests do not have. So is Lloyd's Beacon. And a master in Water can cast 5 Lloyd's Beacons.

I'm guessing there is some element here that I'm missing because I know you know that.

Druid has all the clerical magic, so I won't be missing spells. (+update here)

I got the best bows you can get from Castle Ironfist, and got air magic up to 4 for both characters shortly after, so I have something to deal damage in close range using sparks. Sparks is also over-powered, as you can just back away and keep casting it. And I've played quite a few S+S+S+D parties, with just using sparks.
But with just two characters that is probably not good enough, and I have to use more powerful spells.

At the moment I'm short on money all of the time, as I can't just blow though a lot of low-mid-level quests.
And I'm starting to see how very much more challenging a 1-party playthrough would be ^^
If I had played with just one character, I'd most likely "cheat" a bit by going to NWC dungeon for the gold.

Though I'm very satisfied with the items I've found.

I'm in Silver Cove at the moment, and could kill a Master Sworsman with just sparks. So I guess I'm ready for the temple of Baa in Castle Ironfist.
Though I will probably take the Shadowguild Hideout first.

I'm using a duper and a banker as followers, and have merchant expert (level 4), so I should be able to escape poverty soon ^^
    I'm currently level 7.
    More updates to come

I remember standing at corners and bouncing Sparks off the walls into enemies.

And with fireball, you can damage enemies behind walls. But it's not good when enemies get close, or when auto-targeting messes with you, and it hits a wall close to you.

    Ok,time to play on!

It's just strategy -- tactical retreat is pretty common of all-wizard parties ^^

Update
05/17/2016, 16:21:08

    Sudo writes:

So, from the last update, I decided to stay in Silver Cove and take care of the Silver Helms, as I saw I could kill the Master Swordsmen. So I ran back and forth, resting outside, which was a good way of waiting till the spring equinox (druid promotion).
And I did better than I thought!
All with sparks, and some arrows thrown into the poor stun-locked enemies. ^^
Yes, getting monsters completely stunned is possible with just two characters with sparks, if you have enough speed, and just time the sparks evenly.

Of course I couldn't clean the castle, as the wizards that spawn after opening some chest (or door?) are immune to air.

Then I got the promotion, and exchanged my duper for a gate master back in town, and got to Mist. Where I picked up the Wizard promotion quest, and pretty easily got the enemies list from the Silver Helm Outpost.

Now I'm in Castle Ironfist, just having trained up to level 14 in New Sorpigal, hiring a new duper of course, as I won't be needing a gate master for the quests that awaits in Castle Ironfist.

Update #3 (the one above being update #2)
05/29/2016, 06:04:38

    Sudo writes:

Damn. I did two long sessions of completing lots of quests, and I can hardly remember what I did, as I didn't feel much interesting happened.
But I'm pretty sure after getting my druid promoted, I went to the other Silver Helm castle on Mist, after getting a gate master in Silver Cove.
So I pretty much blew through it, and then I completed the stable fixing quest. Which is easy enough, as you just have to travel. And it lowers your reputation, so it should be done as early as possible, if you need light magic mastery. Though you should probably get dark magic mastery before that (as that requires the worst reputation tier).

Oh, another interesting thing about this playthrough was getting promoted to Archmage very early, to get TP and Lloyd's Beacon early, for my druid.

My memory is too fuzzy about the ordering of it all, so I can't narrate it properly.
So I will just summarize it for you: it wasn't that difficult. I just had to rest more often, and get through dungeons at a slower pace.
But I guess the challenge is ahead, as I've started the hunt for memory crystals. I've already turned in the one from Castle Kriegspear. And I am afraid of every single other castle I have to enter, with just two spell-casters.
But I will make an attempt for the Supreme Temple of Baa now!

Update #4
05/30/2016, 05:01:24

    Sudo writes:

The Supreme Temple of Baa was easier than I had expected. And that was without just speedrunning directly for the memory crystal.
But wow, once you know the password, and find the way to the memory crystal in Castle Alamos, it was a lot easier than I remembered it. I remember having to clear out rooms full of warlocks... but I guess I will save them for later. I just killed a few low-level enemies standing in my way, and finding my way quickly (taking the left corridor, and from the circular room, just straight to the first path to the right, then left).

But it seems Castle Darkmoor will be quite a challenge.
Though I'm pretty sure you can speedrun it as well, I'm still clearing some eyes, one-by-one inside of the huge cave that you get to by the first cube-thingy.

Update #5
05/30/2016, 07:42:59

    Sudo writes:

Castle Darkmoor was easier than expected, when just speedrunning it. Just clicking the cube to activate the last cube, and taking the backdoor to the last cube, and jumping down close to the last cube. As to not land right on the Lich King. I would have no chance against his army. Even at level 57 (I'm level 60 now).

And now I'm really struggling with the Tomb of Varn, as speedrunning doesn't work (way too many enemies!). And slowly taking out enemies is difficult, as the Guardians of Varn (the highest tire of the Anubis-like creatures) are immune to air. And I'm still using sparks, as I found a ring to boost air magic in Paradise Valley, so it makes it extremely difficult, as they absorb the sparks for other enemies in a group of enemies.

Damn, I guess it will take quite a lot of time.

And this is the thing with this playthrough: I just found that it takes longer. It doesn't add some unique challenge. Other than just "getting the achievement" of having done my first 2-player party. Still I have to say, it has been more interesting than playing a full party. As it changed up the ordering of quests and made some minor differences all around.

About Tomb of Varn.
06/06/2016, 17:26:24

    Xanax writes:

Probably a little late, but I did a game once where I tried not to kill anything unless it was absolutely necessary to complete the game and I managed to get through Varn (for the most part) doing that - and I was probably considerably lower level than you were. In Varn you have to kill the Sentinel to get one of the keys and then I found out that I couldn't get down the stairs in the water temple without killing the critters in front of me (just couldn't get past them). Other than that I didn't kill anything.

One part of my strategy was to get somewhere, set a Lloyd's Beacon, Town Portal out, heal up, and then jump back to the beacon. That let me get past a lot of the enemies.

    Sudo writes:

I got through The Tomb of Varn easier than I thought.

Getting into the big room where you enter the codes was the most painful / slow progress. As you have to kill the ones at the "back entrance" to have any chance entering the codes.
This of course involving a lot of Lloyd's Beaconing back and forth. It would really just be painful to play as a solo knight at the later parts, even with two Gate Master peasants.
But I wouldn't exclude playing as a solo Druid or Sorcerer.

I could certainly do Varn faster if I did it again. But I will probably forget about it by the next playthrough -- which is all good ^^

Now it's just getting the scroll of containment or whatever, and going to the Hive.

    Cheers for your helpfulness
