The only time I've ever played with a vampire, I found the spell totally useless, since the room the toggling elevator is in is not connected to the entry rooms at ground level. Believe me, you can kill all the Fire Elementals just fine from the catwalk. Or walk along the catwalk invisibly, if you prefer (I just finished doing that in my no-kill game).
