I decided to go for Mage this time even so. I was only waffling because of the things you mentioned, however the difference in time of being able to get the Mage promotion and the Lich promotion is what decided me. It would have taken me so much longer to level to Lich, and in the meanwhile, the spells available to me would have been rather useless for what I needed. So the advantage there goes to the Mage for being less deadwood earlier in the game.Once I've ever managed to go through the whole game, I will probably go back and play a Lich. (Sad to say, I have the verson 1.0 of the game, but have yet to complete even a single game...)
