I believe that the game can be won without the patches, but you need to know EXACTLY what to do and how to do it. For example, you have to enter Anskram Keep via the back entrance (not obvious - especially when you can enter through the front door) and complete the dungeon without leaving it. Otherwise, a bug prevents you from completing the quest. It's a lot easier with the patches.To get the patches, go to the main page of this site via the button at the top of the Tavern, then click on Patches and then click on Download from the menu on the left. There are 3 patches there. I would strongly advise you to use the first two (the third is for people who patched their games with the old 1.3 patch and want to upgrade).
