I have installed Might and Magic Platinum Edition (e.g., 6-9) on my Windows XP box but have encountered various problems with them.First, periodically during the installation my computer would freeze for a few seconds while the DVD-ROM drive made some of the strangest noises I've ever heard. Immediately after this, the setup program would bring up a dialog box telling me that it had crashed. Then it would simply continue installing as if nothing had happened. Wierd. And it happens with any of the install disks.
Second, all the games except 9 would crash as soon as I tried to launch them. I then tried putting 6-8 in compatibility mode for Windows 98/Me. MM8 now appears to play fine. MM7 loads and appears to run fine; the sound effects originally skipped horribly, but that seems to have disappeared after fiddling with the configuration program. MM6, however, simply won't load; it keeps giving me the following error message:
(3.3) C:\PROGRA~1\Games\MIGHTA~2\mss32.dll: Pager initialisation error 2 - The system cannot find the file specified.
3D0's web site appears to have been swallowed up by a black hole, and I cannot find any help or patches for these problems for MM6 via Google. Good thing they updated these programs to work with Windows XP or I might have had to work on installing them for days instead of hours. *cough* Excellent games, though.
I have tried uninstalling MM6, setting the setup program to compatibility mode, and then reinstalling it. Nothing. If you would walk me through the installation process, I would be grateful. Oh, and please tell me whether you are installing the "extra graphic files" or not - I'd like to know before I spend another half and hour working on getting it to run properly.
