Ubisoft put out one game, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, but I gather from what people have said, this looks more like a first person shooter with certain elements of the RPG grafted on. It's supposed to be good of its type, but falls a long way short of a JvC style RPG.Did MM9 live up to the earlier MM games? Hmmm, that's difficult to answer. I think the answer has to be, no it didn't. The sole reason for this is poor implementation. IMO, it had the potential to be one of the very best, but for financial reasons, it had to be rushed out way 'way before it was ready, and the poor old developers simply didn't have the time to code it properly and get the bugs out of it.
It has huge strengths. It has one of the best AI programs that I've ever met to control the monsters, and the game is very well balanced for most of the characters, although the ranger and paladin are (again IMO) a pair of wusses - especially the ranger. The traces of the Might & Magic humour are well in evidence (try reading some of notices pinned on walls or left on tables) and I think it is well plotted.
It feels quite different due to the different game engine, but I still enjoyed the game. I'm just sorry they didn't have the resources to get it right in the time they had. Bones has put a lot of work into correcting the scripting errors, but even he can't do much with the bugs in the game engine.
