... the advice I would have given would be to look for the "Wizardry" games - Bane of the Cosmic Forge, Crusaders of the Dark Savant, and Wizardry 8. You'll need Dosbox to run the first two, and if you're doing that, you might also try these old DOS games:Eye of the Beholder (EOB1),
The Legend of Darkmoon (EOB2),
Assault on Myth Drannor (EOB3),
Ultima Underworld,
Ultima Underworld 2,
MM2-5, and
Swords of Xeen (SoX)
MM1 was a good game in its day, I'm told, but even by standards of the DOS games above, its graphics are SERIOUSLY crude, and its there mainly now for "completists." The best place to pick up the early MM games and SoX is to see if you can find a copy of MM6 Limited Edition on eBay.
Of the other games, the pick are probably EOB1 & EOB2. One thing - you'll have to draw your own maps or develop a good memory. There was no such thing as automapping in those days!
