I gave up on the original 20? years ago, due to all the bugs.
This version is 1.3. What is on the 1.3a patch?

Gladiator Class

    Dual-wield daggers for assassin?

For the Gladiator, I can't decide between Blade (dual-wield), blade/shield or spear (dual wield).
    Any strong opinions on this?

In my opinion, that's a good party.

Definitely dual-wield daggers for the assassin, give him Black's Heart for one and Integris for the other, and the throwing dagger Trolleri as his ranged weapon.

I prefer to deal damage than turn the Gladiator into a tank, so I normally arm my gladiator with a sword and a spear, Gungnir for the spear, and Jorhgamesh for the sword, together with Kraftig Bage for the ranged weapon. However, this is no more than personal preference, and if you prefer "tank" mode, it's perfectly playable.

Give the Lich the artifact throwing axe Tillhygge.

That 9/12/11 date is probably when GOG acquired the file. The file size might also not be unique depending on how the file was modified (hacked vs re-compiled).

Mok's CSHELL
05/09/2016, 20:59:49

    laudheat writes:

Thank you for Mok's final CSHELL. I loaded it to my data directory in GOG's MM9. The little ship crawls across the Main Screen when I call it up, which it didn't do before, so I know it's reading.

Most importantly, the sloooooooow movement between screens (Inventory, Main, etc.) is a thing of the past.

Bad news: My screen still goes black after Resting. . Luckily, the software only cost me a grand total of $4.28 U.S.
So, if it doesn't work out, I'm not exactly broke, lol.

And, as I said before, IF they're actually using your 1,3 patch, I don't know where it's loaded at. There's also a text file that says Welcome to Might and Magic IX, version 1.2.

BUT, the 3 text files labelled TELPs 1.3 ARE also in the directory. Confusing for me, at least.

The 1.3 patch was officially available for about 2 hours. After I posted it I realized that I have left a few files out. The game's splash screen still says 1.3 but the patch is called TELP13a.exe and is dated 6/9/03 7:41pm.

The GOG version is not quite the same as the original 3DO version. Most but not all of the fixes will have been applied.

The splash screen does indeed say "1.3", but I can't find TELP13a.exe anywhere (tho I might not be looking in the right place). GOG's main MM9 folder lists 3 texts files, titled TELP13 License, Readme and User Guide, but no TELP13a.exe (no TELP13.exe for that matter).

A README file acknowledges that this is GOG's version of MM9 1.2

I'm guessing that they used the modified files....

Our patch modified several of the data files. The *.REZ files are essentially zipped archives. Our patch was created by editing some of the files within the archives and then creating new archives.

I don't have easy access to the modified archive files right now, so I can't tell you the file sizes. I modified the SCRIPTS, DATA, RUDE and ART archives (at least). ART.REZ has that splash screen with 1.3 on it, so it looks like GOG used at least that one.

This is good to know, but I'd like to verify that GOG used all of our files. If so then we can assure folks that that don't need our patch for the GOG version. I'll try to resurrect that hard drive and get back to you on the file sizes.

Perhaps it's your drivers....
05/11/2016, 08:38:11

    Bones writes:

This doesn't sound as though the game is failing. It was designed to run at 800x600. I'm thinking that your display drivers are having a problem rendering the old code. There are three ways you might fix that.

First, check for newer drivers. The problem (if there is one) might have been fixed.

Second, change your screen's resolution to 800x600 or some other 4:3 aspect ratio -- at least while you're playing the game.

Third (my favorite), plug in an old CRT as a second monitor.

    Fingers crossed.

My reply from GOG.com
05/11/2016, 15:27:08

    laudheat writes:

GOG.com replied to my attempt for help:

"Unfortunately, your operating system (Windows10) is not supported for this game. We weren't able to make the game work reliably on our test computers, running that system. Do you, by chance, have an older computer with an older operating system? If not, we'll credit your account."

    So I guess that's it.

Well, you at least know two things now you didn't know before. GoG DID use your 1.3 patch for their version, AND Windows10 won't support MM9.

    I guess it's on to "Witcher." I've played MM6 & MM7 (both on WIN10) to death.

Thanx for the prompt replies. Game on!

OK A brand new set of problems
05/11/2016, 17:06:22

    laudheat writes:

I've promised myself I'm not going to become the site's "24 hour pest." So, I'll try a couple more things, then not bother anyone any more.

If you read my above post, you saw GOG.com's response. They basically threw up their hands and gave up on having this run on Windows 10.

    I tried ONE MORE THING.

I got a friend to loan me his 2 CDs from the original MMIX. I installed them, installed Mok's Final CSHELL, then installed and launched TELP's 1.3a from the "Patches" section of this site.

    Good news and bad new:

The good news is that my party can now come out of Rest Mode without a black screen.

The bad news is that I have little or no control over my mouse. The indicator arrow reacts 15-30 seconds after I move my mouse pad, then it over-reacts. Navigating the Inventory Screen takes a quarter hour this way.

I'm rather hoping this is more easily solve-able than the prior problems. I tried adjusting "Mouse Sensitivity" and "Turn Speed" in "Game Controls." No help.

Please tell me this is much ado about nothing.

P.S. I'm willing to be our guinea pig on MM9 and Windows10 if y'all are willing to tolerate a pest.

That you're willing to test for us, that is. Plenty of folks come here for answers but never post. We can help a lot of folks by examining you setup.

It's also good to know that the different versions of the game are behaving differently. Frustrating, certainly, but it gives us clues and something to work with.

I'm I correct in presuming that you didn't try an old monitor with the GOG install?

The problem you're having now is due to bad code in the 2D engine. That could be either mm9.exe or cshell.dll.
It might be that someone with the right skills needs to modify cshell for Win10. Do you have mm9.exe (and lithtech.exe) set for WinXP SP3 compatibility mode?

I have one more experiment to suggest, but first let us know if compatibility mode helps.

Did the same for lithtech.exe. After the 2nd file, I was prompted to launch the game, which I did. I was taken from the "3DO" opening advertisement (which I hit escape) then to The Main Menu.

My mouse cursor moved better within The Main Menu. (Good news)

I clicked on "Load Game" and waited nearly 2 minutes (Bad news)

Two minutes really IS a long time if you're doing nothing else.

I was FINALLY brought to the "Load Game" screen. But there were NO save games listed. Not even "Autosave"
