I had the identical problem in XP, although mine was with the Millennium edition. It kept telling me the disk was bad and it was not (worked fine on another computer). The problem is with the CD drive. You say your old computer is shot. Is the CD drive on it shot? If not, rip it out of the case and plug it into your new computer. You will probably need to find a driver for it as well (should be one online somewhere). See if that solves the problem. (Hi all, long time no see. I've been playing Baldur's Gate...)
