Original Message:   You can try this...
I have a similar system to yours 2000+, 512Mb, ATI 7500, AC '97 sound system - major difference is I have XP Pro. The kernel in XP HE and XP Pro is not the same. This may be a contributing cause of the problem on your computer.

When I made the application compatibility database I built it using the Windows 2000 layer, which combined with the 95/98 shortcut selections was the only combination that I could get to work successfully. I was able to run it 3D Hardware both Audio and Sound without it blowing up. And I'm using Directx 9.0c.

I used MM Millenium loading from the standard setup. MM Millenium's MM7 loads version 1.1.

Since the OSs are not quite the same and I don't have an XP HE system available, I recommend you download the Application Compatibility Toolkit from Microsoft and see if you can build one for yourself that works.

My best guess is that it is blowing up when trying to attach to the sound system.

This link to the Microsoft site may download the toolkit. It is 25MB.
