We bought our first house in 1971, and when we sold it early in 1975, we got more than double what we had paid for it. If we hadn't managed to get on the housing ladder then, we would really would have struggled to be able to afford one. During that period, house prices were not just rising, they were rocketing up. However, it very much amused me to work out in (about) 1985 that it cost me almost exactly the same fraction of my monthly income to fill the petrol tank of my car as it had in 1966!
