I don't remember from the top of my head what I've given him to offset the penalty. However, once your stats go over 50, it doesn't matter much what their value really is, because you get discrete increments in performance only each 25 points. So if you have Accuracy of 90 or more, -40 Accuracy just means -1 to your Attack Bonus -- hardly worth mentioning. (However, my necromancer in particular has some peculiar equipment. It's almost like one half gives bonuses to offset the penalties of the other half  )
