There is only one thing that might stop you, and that is if the item is deposited in a chest in an area that you have entered, and the other items in the chest are arranged in a way that that doesn't leave the remaining room in the right shape for the large treasures. In practical terms that is only likely to happen for armour and large weapons such as spears and halberds. But I did lose a Galahad (artifact armour) that way once - merely because I didn't open the chest twice.
