One of your tasks in MM4 is to build your own Castle and open the various shops in it. But IIRC you still have to play the game very carefully to get further than level about 27. You can't formally get promoted above level 25 until you open the portals to the Darkside, so you have to save the few positions that promote you a level until you've gone as far as the trainer will take you . . .
