Unfortunately, as you say, it's rather empty. But fortunately, I can say that by this time I have a pretty good knowledge about purposes of various things and stats in the game.
And Grayface's patch just contains everything that was done in this area, so it (besides Grayface's work) gives you for example Mok's patch (and bunch of others). I have this patch-pack installed and I have never run into those famous recovery problems, for instance, nor have I encountered getting stuck in buildings and doors, not being able to open doors etc. etc.
