MM9 is tricky in that you don't start as a particular class & continue along that class's promotion path, you start as Fighter (eventually branching to all "might" paths) or Initiate (eventually branching to all "magic" paths). I can very easily see how this could happen in MM9: the first "might" trainer you met, you promoted everyone who appeared as eligible, and eventually ended up with 2 of the same class, and the first "magic" trainer" you met, you did the same. MM9, more than MM6/7/8, you need to plan out what you want your final party to be, and only accept the relevant promotions for your characters, and explicitly DON'T accept promo from trainers that will send you don't a path you don't want. You can accept all the quests (I think), just don't pick those characters for promotion when the option comes up
