Error 57 is usually an external device i/o error. Most likely your sound card or it could be a CDR drive. If you have an old SB sound card clone it probably is not capable of MIDI input and output at the same time, and so would generate an error on initialization. SoftStep v2.0 and later traps this error and simply turns off the MIDI Port. Earlier versions require the use of the -m option, which is explained in the Appendix of the online manual. Try changing the MIDI Port settings in the Options menu. If you have one of those old cards, you may have to use just MIDI Out , and leave MIDI In off. |
