The name derives from the Latin "Castra", meaning a camp, because it was a Roman border fortress to defend that part of Roman Britain from Celtic incursions. The full name was Deva Castra. I'm told it was not one of the favourite places for a Roman soldier to be sent - at least, in the soldier's opinion... ![]() |
